Democrats in Congress have made health care policy the central issue. They say extending Affordable Care Act subsidies is urgent because open enrollment starts soon. NPR Selena Simmons-Duffin explains that when people go to health care.gov to shop for plans, they may see that their premium costs have doubled.
Starting point is 00:00:50 24 million people are enrolled in Affordable Care Act plans. Many are small business owners, including farmers and ranchers. During the pandemic, the federal government boosted subsidies to offset the cost of monthly premiums for almost everyone enrolled in these plans, but that subsidy policy expires at the end of the year, and some people will have to pay hundreds or thousands more per month. Democrats say they won't vote to reopen the government until there's a plan to extend those subsidies. Republicans say any negotiations over the policy have to come after the shutdown ends, and so far there's no sign that either party is going to blink. Selina Simmons-Duffin, NPR News, Washington.
Starting point is 00:01:29 President Trump is planning to leave for the Middle East this afternoon after his on-voice, Steve Whitkoff, and his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, were cheered at the weekly rally in Tel Aviv's hostage square. The U.S. broker ceased fire between Israel and Hamas is now in its third day. The FBI on the scene in the Mississippi Delta town of Leland where six people were killed and some 20 others were injured during Friday night's high school homecoming celebration. Speaking alongside local officials, Agent Robert Eikov said the Bureau is assisting in the search for suspects. The FBI is here to stand in solidarity with our law enforcement partners to ensure that we bring justice for those victims and bring those subjects, arrest them and bring them to justice.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Local media on the other side of the state say an 18-year-old person of interest is in custody following a shooting that left two people dead at Heidelberg High School's homecoming game. Powerful storm system forecast to disrupt travel and daily life across the northeastern U.S. over the coming days. Bruce Conveiser reports a state of emergency has been declared for all of New Jersey. Coastal areas are expected to be hardest hit by the storm. Forecasters say it could dump more than three inches of rain from the Carolinas to New England through Tuesday. Powerful winds that could gust up to 60 miles per hour are the top concern. Authorities warn the winds could cause significant beach erosion, down power lines and worsen flooding. Airlines have already canceled dozens of flights across the
Starting point is 00:02:56 country and delayed more than 7,000. In New York City, empty tractor trailers and tandem vehicles will be banned on bridges and tunnels beginning this afternoon. Many outdoor events are being scrapped. Staten Island, one of New York's five boroughs, canceled its half marathon in the name of public safety. A federal appeals court is blocking President Trump from deploying National Guard troops to the Chicago area. The court has left in place a lower court's temporary order but said the troops can stay in the state and remained under federal control for now. A separate court battle is also keeping troops from being deployed in Portland, Oregon. However, they are in Memphis
Starting point is 00:03:46 with the blessing of Tennessee's governor. The Office of Madagascar's president says that an attempted coup was underway on the Indian Ocean Island. Michael Koloki reports it comes amid escalating countrywide protests that began in September. In a written statement posted on social media, President Andre Rajalina's office said an attempted illegal and forcible seizure of power was underway in the country. He did not offer further evidence. The remarks come amid reports that soldiers, from an elite military unit in the country have joined protests on the streets of the nation's capital
Starting point is 00:04:20 and Tanada Rivo. For more than two weeks now, Madagascar has witnessed widespread and rest. Protesters have been calling for an end to frequent water and power cuts. They have also denounced the government and called for the president to step down. But Mr. Rajalina has given no indication he will resign. According to the United Nations, several people have been killed and many others injured amid the demonstrations. For NPR News, I'm Michael Koloki in Nairobi. Cameroon is holding a presidential election today. candidates are on the ballot, including President Paul Bia, who is 93 years old. He was first elected president in 1982 and is now seeking a eighth term. Cameroon has had just two
