As the Gaza ceasefire enters its fourth day, The remaining living hostages being held by Hamas could be released as early as this morning.
Starting point is 00:00:32 President Trump, meanwhile, spoke briefly to reporters about the deal while flying to Israel and Air Force One. NPR's Luke Garrett reports. President Trump celebrated the peace deal's truck between Israel and Hamas, crediting his administration, along with the leaders of Qatar and Turkey. While on Air Force One, Trump said he would like to visit Gaza one day. I'd like to do it. I'd like to put my feet on it, at least. But I think it's going to be a great miracle over the coming. decades. When asked about the redevelopment of Gaza and his previously proposed plan to turn it into the Riviera of the Middle East, Trump said, I don't know about the Riviera for a while, because you take
Starting point is 00:01:08 a look at what you have. You have to get people taken care of us. But it's going to start really essentially immediately. Trump is scheduled to visit Israel, meet with the hostage families, speak at the Knesset, and then go to Egypt for a Middle East peace ceremony. Luke Garrett and PR News, the White House. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is responding to threats by President Trump to have him arrested. Last week, Trump said Pritzker should be jailed for failing to protect ICE officials in Chicago, but Pritzker says the law is on his side. He does not have the power to overcome the Constitution. And so am I afraid? I am not afraid. Do I think that he could do it? He might. But as I've said before, come and get me. I mean, you're dead wrong, Mr. President
Starting point is 00:01:51 and Mr. Vice President. And I will stand up for the law and the Constitution. That's what we do in the state of Illinois. Trump has been trying to send National Guard troops into Chicago, and Pritzker has been critical of those efforts. The government shutdown is about to begin its 13th day. Democrats in Congress have made health care policy the central issue. They say extending Affordable Care Act subsidies is urgent because open enrollment starts soon. MPR Selena Simmons-Duffin reports that when people now go to health care.gov to shop for plans, they may see that their premium costs have doubled. 24 million people are enrolled in Affordable Care Act plans. Many are
Starting point is 00:02:27 small business owners, including farmers and ranchers. During the pandemic, the federal government boosted subsidies to offset the cost of monthly premiums for almost everyone enrolled in these plans, but that subsidy policy expires at the end of the year, and some people will have to pay hundreds or thousands more per month. Democrats say they won't vote to reopen the government until there's a plan to extend those subsidies. Republicans say any negotiations over the policy have to come after the shutdown ends, and so far there's no sign that either party, is going to blink. Selina Simmons-Duffin, NPR News, Washington.
Starting point is 00:03:01 At least four people are dead and 20 others injured following a shooting early Sunday morning on the South Carolina Island of St. Helena. The shooting took place outside a bar that was packed for a high school alumni event. Police have not said what prompted the shooting. You're listening to NPR News. President Trump is warning Russia
Starting point is 00:03:23 that he may send long-range tomahawk missiles to Ukraine if Moscow doesn't end the war there soon. Speaking to reporters in Air Force One, he said Russia doesn't need that kind of escalation. His comments came after he spoke with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Russia attacked Ukraine's energy infrastructure Saturday night, temporarily knocking out power to some 800,000 people. Denmark will boost its defense budget by almost $9 billion.
Starting point is 00:03:47 As Terry Schultz reports, about half of the new spending will go toward increasing the security presence on the semi-autonomous island of Greenland because of fears that President Trump still wants to acquire it. The headquarters for the Danish Joint Arctic Command will be established in Greenland's capital of Nook. Other new security measures for the area include buying new patrol vessels with icebreaker capabilities,
Starting point is 00:04:10 drones, maritime surveillance aircraft, plus laying an undersea communications cable between Greenland and Denmark. President Trump has said multiple times that he wants the world's largest island to become part of the U.S. and wouldn't rule out using force to make that happen. Copenhagen will spend an additional $4 billion purchasing 16 more F-35s.
Starting point is 00:04:30 That will bring the Danish Air Force's total fleet of the U.S.-built fighter jets to 43. For NPR News, I'm Terry Schultz.
