Washington in a few hours after hailing the ceasefire deal he brokered between Israel and Hamas. He spoke Monday to the Israeli parliament and M.Piazai-Batrari reports he stood with foreign leaders in Egypt.
Starting point is 00:00:42 This was an important summit. It brought together leaders from Europe, the Mideast, and beyond. And it signaled that what comes next for Gaza will require international attention, including resources and boots on the ground. These countries had been pressing for a ceasefire for a while. But ultimately, it was Trump's intervention now. that brought Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree and got Egypt and Qatar, the two mediators, to convince Hamas that releasing the hostages had Trump's guarantee of a permanent end to the war. But what comes next is murky, and there is still a lot that needs to be worked out. Gaza need tons of humanitarian aid, reconstruction, and Israeli forces still control more than half of Gaza's territory. The ceasefire raising hope for a long-term truce in the region, but unresolved issues remain,
Starting point is 00:01:26 including Hamas disarmament and how Gaza will be governed. A one-time Democrat who became a Trump loyalist is running to be Georgia's top elections official. From member station WABE, Rahul Bali, reports that Vernon Jones ran for Congress in 2022, repeating false claims that Georgia's 2020 election was stolen. Vernon Jones is a longtime political figure in the Atlanta area serving as the elected CEO of one of the state's biggest counties and as a Democratic state lawmaker. Jones became a Republican in 2021 and has been one of Trump's higher-profile black surrogates. In his campaign launch ad, Jones tout some of the same things Trump wants changed with elections and voting. We need a secretary of state who will fight for paper ballots, limit mail-in voting, and enforce strong voter ID laws. Jones is looking to replace incumbent Republican Brad Raffensberger, a key figure against Trump's efforts to overturn Georgia's 20-20 election results.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Raffensberger is running for governor. For NPR news, I'm Raul Bally in Atlanta. Thousands of flights have been delayed. Hundreds more have been canceled as a result of a nor' Easter. The storm began over the weekend and continues to drench parts of the Mid-Atlantic, as Impairs Juliana Kim reports. More than 5,000 U.S. flights have been affected so far, with the most delays reported at Boston-Logan International Airport
Starting point is 00:02:51 and LaGuardia Airport in New York. There were also nearly 900 U.S. flights. canceled. On social media, both airports advised passengers to check in with their airlines about their flights. Over the past few days, a slow-moving storm slammed states along the East Coast, bringing fierce winds, coastal flooding, and power outages. Starting point is 00:03:30 town of Leland. The FBI says three men have been charged with capital murder and a woman with attempted murder. A motive is unclear, but the FBI says the shooting during a high school homecoming celebration apparently stemmed from a disagreement among several people. The FBI says other arrests are pending. Broadway musicians have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike if negotiations with producers break down. The move comes after a strike, Authorization by the union representing actors, as Jeff London reports. Talks between both unions in the Broadway League, the organization which represents producers and theater owners, are ongoing. But coming on the heels of Broadway's most successful season ever, with a box office tally of close to $1.9 billion,
Starting point is 00:04:15 the musicians union says it's not interested in making concessions. President Bob Stillman claims the League is threatening to cut wages, health care, and jobs, stating, quote, local 802 Broadway musicians and other artists are ready to leverage every ounce of their collective power up to and including a strike. The Broadway League has said, quote, we always prefer to negotiate with our union partners at the bargaining table rather than in the press. For NPR News, I'm Jeff London in New York.
