Coffman.org Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Louise Skiavone. President Trump is taking his first official trip of this presidential term to Asia. While in the region, the president is saying that he's open to meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the itinerary stops in Malaysia and Japan before arriving in South

Korea next week. NPR's Deepa Chivaram reports. On route to Malaysia, Trump told reporters on Air Force 1 that if Kim was willing to meet, he'd be open to it. He said that he and Kim had a great relationship, and he says Kim knows that he's coming to the region, but he hasn't spoken with the North Korean leader. Trump last met with Kim in 2019 when he made a visit to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. It came together quickly after Trump tweeted and proposed a meeting at the DMZ to shake Kim's hand and say hello. After attending the ASEAN summit in Malaysia and traveling to Tokyo, Trump will fly to South Korea, where he's expected to attend events at the APEC summit and meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. This is day 25 of the government shutdown with no apparent movement to end the stalemate. House Speaker Mike Johnson says he will not call the House back into session until after Democrats vote to reopen the government. Democrats are pressing to extend tax subsidies for health care due to expire at the end of the year. And PR's Ron Elving has more. The Democrats say it's all about health care. Premium subsidies for people on Obamacare. Much higher bills are about to hit home for millions of Americans. And they live disproportionately in states that voted for Trump. So there could be some rising tension there. The Republicans in Congress say the Democrats just want to fight, and they save for their part. There's nothing to negotiate. And PR's Ron Elving. declaring that he is ready to increase trade tariffs on Canada by 10 percent, that after the province of Ontario ran a TV advertisement during the first game of the World Series criticizing tariffs. Hurricane Melissa is expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane. in the Caribbean tomorrow, the storm could bring life-threatening and catastrophic flash flooding and landslides to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica. NPR's Kristen Wright has more. Weather officials in Jamaica say time's running out for people there to get ready for Hurricane Melissa. It's forecasted to make landfall on the island in the coming days. Evan Thompson, director of the meteorological service of Jamaica, is warning of the danger

of the storm moving so slowly. It's going to sit there pouring water. while it's barely moving. And that is a significant challenge that we have to be aware of. Haiti and the Dominican Republic are also under special hurricane advisories. In Cuba, the U.S. Navy ordered some evacuations at Guantanamo Bay.

Kristen Wright, NPR News. This is NPR. Hormel Foods is recalling nearly 4.9 million pounds of frozen, boneless chicken products that sold to restaurants, cafeterias, and other food service outlets, customers have reported finding metal in the chicken breast and thigh products.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that Hormel found that the metal came from a conveyor belt used in production. No illnesses or injuries have been reported. A Picasso painting, long hidden from public view, has taken Paris by surprise after selling for nearly $37 million at auction. NPR's Rebecca Rossman reports. Painted in 1943, bust of a woman with a flowered hat shows Picasso's former muse and lover, Dora Mar, in vivid color as their relationship was falling apart. The portrait unseen for more than eight decades, far exceeded expectations at the Drouot auction house, becoming the most expensive artwork sold in France this year. auctioneer Christoph Lucien called it a little piece of the story of love between Picasso and Marr.

Picasso eventually left Mar for the younger Francoise Gillo. While the sale topped estimates, it's far from Picasso's personal. priciest.
