The strikes have been long expected and retaliation for Iranian ballistic missile attacks launched against Israel earlier this month. NPR's Jackie Northam reports. Israel's military says it launched what it calls precise strikes against military targets in Iran. Iranian media reported several large explosions in the capital Tehran

The attack had been expected for several weeks, after Iran launched around 180 ballistic missiles at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders and to Israel sending ground troops into southern Lebanon. The concern now is the two countries could get into this tit-for-tat situation which could lead to a broader regional war, one that could pull in the US. Jackie Northam,
Starting point is 00:01:14 NPR News. A US official meanwhile says the US did not participate in the Israeli action but they said the US would help if Iran responds. Palestinian health officials say Israeli airstrikes in southern Gaza have killed at least 38 people. Fifteen of them were members of the same extended family. Thirteen members of the family were children. In Lebanon, meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes in the southeastern part of that country have killed three journalists. Vice President Kamala Harris today called in some star power for a rally she held in Houston, where she was joined on stage by the singer Beyoncé.

The woman who's been pushing for what this country really needs right now. Unity. An estimated 30,000 people attended the Harris rally, making it the largest one yet of her campaign. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, meanwhile, was in Austin to record an interview for a popular podcast. NPR's Ashley Lopez reports. Joe Rogan has the most listened to podcast in the country.

You're listening to NPR News. An E. coli outbreak affecting at least 75 people in the West and Midwest has now expanded to more states. As NPR's Ping Wong reports, people have gotten sick after eating McDonald's Quarter Pounders.
Starting point is 00:03:27 The E. coli bacteria strain and this outbreak can cause severe infections. At least 75 people in 13 states have gotten sick in the past few weeks, most recently on October 10th. Nearly two dozen people have been hospitalized, a few with severe kidney problems, and one person has died. Most of these patients were recalled eating a McDonald's Quarter Pounder before they got ill. That's a beef burger topped with onions and pickles. Federal health authorities say the culprit may be the slivered onions or the beef patty. The onions have been recalled by the supplier and McDonald's has stopped selling Quarter Pounders in several states for now. Consumers who develop symptoms of E. coli infections like fever, vomiting, and prolonged diarrhea are advised to seek medical care. Ping Huang, NPR News. Officials in Ukraine say a Russian drone hit a
Starting point is 00:04:13 residential building Friday in the capital of Kyiv. The blast triggered fires in several apartments. Local officials say one person has died and five others were injured. Elsewhere, a Russian missile attack on the city of Dnipro hit a medical facility in some residences Friday night. Officials say three people were killed and at least nine others injured there. While the US economy continues to improve, Russia's central bank today raised interest rates to a record high 21 percent. That move is intended to slow the nation's chronic inflation. Government spending on the military amid the fighting in Ukraine is
