The Israeli military launched strikes on military targets in Iran overnight.
The attacks come as the Biden administration has pushed for months to avoid a wider war
in the region.
Here's NPR's Hasmah Khaled reporting.
A senior administration official told reporters the United States did not participate in Israel's
military operation, though President Biden had encouraged Israel to pursue a targeted response.
And the U.S. official says that is what has transpired.
The Israeli military has said these strikes
were in retaliation for months of continuous attacks
from Iran against Israel.
The Biden administration official says
this should now be the end of the direct exchange of fire
between Israel and Iran, though if
Iran responds, the United States is prepared to help Israel.
The White House insists its aim in the region is to de-escalate tensions.
Asma Khalid, NPR News.
Iran is downplaying any damage, and the Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying Iran is
entitled and obligated to defend itself, but that it recognizes its
responsibilities toward regional peace and stability.
Former President Donald Trump showed up three hours late to his rally in Michigan last night
following the taping of a lengthy interview with a popular podcaster.
NPR's Stephen Fowler has more.
Trump talked with Joe Rogan for almost three hours Friday in a freewheeling interview that covered little new ground.
He rehashes negative views towards immigration,
his opponents, his 2020 election loss,
and polling that doesn't show him winning.
You know how polls are done?
Oh, I'm going to get myself in trouble,
but so I really don't believe too much in him.
In Traverse City, Michigan,
a tired-sounding Trump apologized
for showing up three hours late, saying the interview was important because he's trying to win.
There too, he spoke in dire language about immigrants and the stakes of the election.

Trump is set to hold another event in Michigan today as voters there began casting ballots.
Michigan's early voting period starts today. Kamala Harris also campaigning in Michigan today,
appearing with Michelle Obama in Kalamazoo. A new study shows more abortions being performed
across the country now than before Roe v. Wade was overturned. Elizabeth Caldwell from Member
Station KWGS reports. The hashtag We Count Report shows a small increase in monthly abortions
nationwide. Only three states with bans, Idaho, Texas, and Oklahoma, saw actual declines. Dr. Ushma Upadhyay with
the University of California San Francisco says the decrease indicates
unmet need. We believe that it's people who are most disenfranchised, most, you
know, left out of the health care system, people living in poverty, people
with low access to digital resources.
Researchers say they're waiting for federal data on births to paint a fuller picture.
You're listening to NPR News. Several North Carolina schools forced to close
because of Hurricane Helene are starting to get back
to teaching students in Buncombe County.
Students returned yesterday after four weeks, but Superintendent Rob Jackson says they will
remain on a two-hour delay through next week because many roads and bridges remain closed.
We wanted the sun to be able to come up because we do have new bus routes.
We have teenage drivers and parents who are driving their children as well.
Jackson says the county has set up a resource center staffed with social workers and counselors
from school districts throughout the state to help students and teachers readjust. Democratic
Governor Roy Cooper said this week that damage and recovery needs in western North Carolina
will likely exceed $53 billion. Los Angeles Dodgers have won Game 1 of the World
Series 6-3 over the New York Yankees on a dramatic walk-off home run. Steve Futterman
reports from Dodger Stadium.
This was the moment, one that will likely go down in World Series history. the ball to right field. She is gone. The call on Fox Sports,
the Dodgers trailing 3 to 2 in the
10th inning and down to their final
out won the game on a walk off
Grand Slam Homer by Freddie Freeman.
There was no doubt when he hit it,
Freeman crushed the ball after the game.
He said it was like a childhood
fantasy come true for it to actually
happen and hit a home run and walk it off,
that's as good as it gets right there.
It's the first World Series game to end on a walk-off grand slam.
