Starting point is 00:00:00 Noor Ram. Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Noor Ram. The presidential campaigns are focusing on key swing states this weekend. Kamala Harris will be in Philadelphia today after campaigning in Michigan yesterday with former First Lady Michelle Obama. This was the first time the two have appeared together as Harris focuses her campaign on reproductive rights. NPR's Deepa Sivaram reports.
Starting point is 00:00:43 In Kalamazoo, Obama said people were holding Harris and her opponent, former President Trump, to different standards. She also spoke at length directly to men about how further limits and restraints on access to women's health care would impact them and their sons too. So I am asking y'all from the core of my being to take our lives seriously. Please. Her remarks echoed what Harris has been saying over the weekend as she tries to increase support from men who are favoring Trump over her.

Former president Donald Trump was also in Pennsylvania yesterday seeking support from young men during a rally at Penn State University. Kamala will destroy your inheritance but much more importantly she's going to destroy your country. If you vote for me I will ensure that you begin your careers young people in a roaring economy in a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity. Trump is taking his campaign to New York City's Madison Square Garden for a rally tonight. Israel is holding an official Memorial Day to commemorate its civilians, soldiers and officers who were killed throughout the continuing war.
Starting point is 00:01:58 NPR's Daniel Estrin reports from Tel Aviv there were deadly new Israeli strikes in north Gaza and a truck ramming in central Israel. Israeli police say a truck driver rammed into a group of people at a bus stop next to a military intelligence base, wounding several dozen people before armed civilians shot the driver. In Gaza, health officials report more than 30 people killed in Beit Lahya in North Gaza Saturday night. Gaza's civil defense first responder group says it's no longer able to respond to calls for help because of the intense Israeli military assault there.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Israel is holding official memorial ceremonies marking the anniversary, according to the Hebrew calendar, of the deadly October 7th Hamas attack on Israel and commemorating those civilians, soldiers and security personnel also killed in the past year of war. Daniel Estrin, NPR News, Tel Aviv. The United Nations Security Council is expected to convene tomorrow at the request of Iran to discuss Israel's attacks on Iran this weekend. It claims the attacks violate international law.
Starting point is 00:03:02 The Israeli ambassador to the UN called it another attempt by Iran to harm Israel, this time in the diplomatic arena. Ambassador Danny Dannen said Israel has the right and duty to defend itself and protect its citizens. This is NPR News in Washington. Japan is holding parliamentary elections today. According to exit polls, the liberal Democratic Party of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is expected to likely to lose the majority in the 465-seat house.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Ishiba had called for the snap elections shortly after taking office this month, hoping to win public support for his leadership. His predecessor had resigned over the cost of living and a scandal involving donations to lawmakers. Tens of thousands of demonstrators from the left and the right took to the streets of London this weekend in three separate protest marches. Vicki Barker reports from the British Capitol. Supporters of the far-right figure Tommy Robinson waved British flags and chanted his name at their London march, supporting those arrested in this summer's racist anti-immigrant riots. Robinson wasn't there.
Starting point is 00:04:13 He'd been jailed for contempt of court after repeating libelous allegations against a Syrian refugee. Police held them away from this. 19th March, 19th March, 19th March. Counter-demonstrators from the organization stand up to racism. At a separate march against police brutality, the family of Chris Cabba delivered a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer protesting the acquittal of the police officer who shot the unarmed 40-year-old to death two years ago.
