a rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City tonight, touching on familiar themes.
DONALD TRUMP. With your vote in this election, I will end inflation. I will stop the invasion
of criminals coming into our country.
And I will bring back the American dream.
We need the American dream.
The rally started with a number of speakers with a list of racist remarks, vulgar insults and profanity.
The Deep Blue State isn't a swing state, but Trump was born in New York.
He claims he will take the state in the election in nine days, but he lost his home state by around 23 percentage points during the 2016 and 2020 elections.
Kamala Harris, meanwhile, campaigned in the swing state of Pennsylvania again today,
visiting several sites across the city of Philadelphia. Tomorrow, she returns to Michigan
and Tuesday, she holds a rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
to Michigan on Tuesday. She holds a rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Egypt has announced a proposal to end the war in Gaza. As NPR's Daniel Estrin reports
from Tel Aviv, U.S. and Israeli intelligence chiefs have met to try to jumpstart the ceasefire
talks.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is proposing a two-day ceasefire between Israel
and Hamas and the release of four hostages held in Gaza in exchange for an
unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. And Egypt is proposing 10 days of
negotiations in an effort to reach a permanent ceasefire.
Hamas had no immediate comment and Israeli official told NPR
Israel's Mossad spy chief met today with CIA chief William
Burns in Qatar to jumpstart ceasefire efforts.
The official, speaking anonymously to discuss details of the closed-door efforts, says Israel
sees an opportunity, this after having struck Iran Saturday and having killed the leaders
of Hamas and Hezbollah recently.
Danielle Estrin, NPR News, Tel Aviv. California's governor unveiled a proposal
that's aimed at keeping entertainment productions
in the state.
Empire's Mondalee Del Barco reports
he wants to boost tax credits.
Film and TV productions made in California
have plummeted in the past few years,
particularly with more reality shows and game shows
relocating from LA to Atlanta or Canada.
Some blame the pandemic,
last year's strikes by Hollywood writers and performers, industry-wide layoffs and
cost cutting. Add to that, other states and countries now offer producers tax breaks for
shooting on location. Hoping to keep productions in California or to lure them back, Governor
Gavin Newsom has announced he'd like to more than double the state's current budget for tax credits to $750 million. If legislators pass his proposal, California
would offer the second most generous incentive package after Georgia, which has given productions
more than a billion dollars in tax credits this year.

An old Norse saga tells of a dead man hurled into a well in the 12th century.
Ari Daniels reports DNA now suggests what he may have looked like and where he came
from.
Excavations of the well revealed a man's skeleton, possibly that of the person described
in the saga.
Archaeologists and evolutionary genomicists teamed up to extract enough DNA from the root of one of the teeth
to sequence the individual's genome.
Michael Martin is at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
We were able to deduce that he was a male.
We could say that he was very likely to have blue eyes, blonde hair, and an intermediate skin tone,
and that his ancestry traces back to a very specific county in southern Norway.
Martin says the genomic analysis adds new detail to the centuries-old saga, a story
that may have its moments of exaggeration, but that is, overall, rooted in fact.

At the weekend box office, Venom, The Last Dance debuted in the top spot with an estimated
$51 million in ticket sales. Internationally, the Sony Pictures' third Venom film took
in $124 million. In second place, last week's number one film, the horror sequel, Smile
2, with $9 million, it faired slightly better overseas, collecting $12
million internationally. There was a tie for third place, Conclave, the papal thriller starring Ralph
Fiennes and The Wild Robot, both with $6.5 million. U.S. futures contracts are trading higher at this
hour. I'm Janene Herbst, and you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
