KOROVA-COLEMAN, FORMER PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP CAMPAIGNED YESTERDAY IN NEW YORK CITY'S
FAMED MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. NPR News in Washington. Ankora Vakulman, former President Donald Trump, campaigned yesterday in New York City's famed Madison Square Garden.
One of his guest speakers, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe,
drew criticism for saying Puerto Rico was a, quote,
floating island of garbage.
The Republican Party chair of Puerto Rico denounced the comment as racist.
The Trump campaign released a statement saying the comedian's, quote,
joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or his campaign.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris spent the day yesterday crisscrossing Philadelphia
and Piers Asmahallid has more.
The vice president specifically was trying to energize black and brown voters, focused
on energizing voters in the key state of Pennsylvania.
Here she is at a rally in Philadelphia.
We must not wake up the day after the election and have any regrets about
what we could have done in these next nine days. Harris had a series of smaller retail
stops visiting a black barber shop and later a Puerto Rican restaurant where she spoke
about her plan for economic development and investment in the electrical grid on the island.
Asma Khalid in PR News. With about a week until Election Day, some 35 million voters around the country have
already cast their ballots early for this fall's election.
NPR's Hansi Lo Wang reports.
If you're planning to vote by mail, the Postal Service is urging you to check your state's
deadline and return your ballot at least one week before that date, which may be coming
up very soon, now that the last day of voting is about one week away.
Absentee voters could also consider turning in their ballot
at their local election office
or at any available drop box.
Today is the last chance for eligible voters
in Colorado and Washington to sign up online
to vote in this election.
Those who miss this deadline can still register in person
through election day.
There's also time to sign up in person
in the swing states of Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin. But Wisconsinites, take note, you can get registered at your
municipal clerk's office through Friday or wait to register and vote at the polls on
November 5th. Hansi Lawong, NPR News.
Egypt is proposing a brief ceasefire in Gaza and an exchange of some hostages and prisoners.
As NPR's Daniel Estrin reports from Tel Aviv,
no progress on a ceasefire is expected
before the U.S. general election next week.
Egypt's president this weekend
proposed an initial two-day ceasefire
and the exchange of four hostages in Gaza
for an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
Egypt is proposing further steps
toward a permanent ceasefire.
Israel and Hamas have not officially responded to the proposal.
The CIA chief and Israel's Mossad spy chief have met in Qatar to discuss these efforts.
An Arab official in the region said Israel rejected the proposal.
Another official briefed on the talks said Israel is considering the Egyptian proposal
but waiting for the results of the U.S. elections
before moving forward.
The officials spoke anonymously to discuss
the closed-door talks.
More talks are expected this week.

President Biden released a statement yesterday
observing the sixth anniversary of a gunman's deadly attack
on a Pittsburgh synagogue. The gunman killed 11 worshipers from multiple congregations
and injured seven others. He was sentenced to death last year after he was convicted
on 63 charges, including hate crimes resulting in death. California's governor has unveiled
a proposal aimed at keeping entertainment productions in the state. And Piers Mandelit Del Barco reports
he wants to boost tax credits.
Film and TV productions made in California
have plummeted in the past few years,
particularly with more reality shows and game shows
relocating from LA to Atlanta or Canada.
Some blame the pandemic.
Last year's strikes by Hollywood writers and performers,
industry-wide layoffs and cost cutting.
Add to that, other states and countries now offer producers tax
breaks for shooting on location. Hoping to keep productions in California or to
lure them back, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced he'd like to more than
double the state's current budget for tax credits to 750 million dollars. If
legislators pass his proposal, California would offer the second most generous incentive
package after Georgia, which has given productions
more than a billion dollars in tax credits this year.

A British cheese distributor says
a con artist has stolen nearly 50,000 pounds of award-winning
cheddar cheese.
The high-quality cheese is worth nearly $400,000. Detectives at Scotland Yard are
helping search for the thief. Officials say that nearly 1,000 wheels of cloth-wrapped cheese
from three makers have vanished.
