Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herpbst. With less than a week to go to the election, both candidates are making their last-minute
push to get undecided voters to choose them.
Former President Trump rallied in the swing state of Wisconsin yesterday, responding to
President Biden's reported comment seemingly referring to Trump supporters as garbage.
My response to Joe and Kamala is very simple.
You can't lead America if you don't love Americans.
That's true.
The White House spent much of the day trying to clarify Biden's remarks. Biden says he
was calling out those who demonize Latinos, following comments by a comedian at Trump's
Madison Square Garden rally Sunday night, who referred to Puerto Rico as a floating
island of garbage.
Vice President Harris was also in Wisconsin telling supporters in Madison,
Americans want something different than what Trump and Republicans are offering.
Folks are exhausted and want it to stop the pointing fingers.
It is time that we start locking arms together as a people who rise and fall together. Today Trump rallies in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Las Vegas.
Harris also campaigns in Las Vegas and Arizona today.
North Korea claims to have test launched what South Korea thinks is an intercontinental
ballistic missile.
And Pierce Anthony Kuhn reports that if confirmed,
it would be the North's first ICBM test since December of 2023.
The South's Joint Chiefs of Staff says the missile was launched eastward at a steep angle
from somewhere around the capital Pyongyang. In a statement, U.S. National Security Council
spokesperson Sean Savitt condemned the launch as a flagrant violation of U.N. Security Council spokesperson Sean Savitt condemned the launch as a flagrant violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
He added that the U.S. will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the U.S.
homeland, South Korea, and Japan.
South Korea's Defense Intelligence Agency told lawmakers Wednesday that the North was
preparing for an ICBM test and possibly a seventh nuclear test, too.
The agency said that in addition to testing
the weapons capabilities, the North might also be trying to get U.S. attention ahead
of elections next month. Anthony Kuhn, NPR News, Seoul.
In Spain, at least 95 people have died from the storm that devastated entire towns in
the eastern part of the country. Flash floods turned streets into rivers that swept cars
away. NPR's Miguel Macias has more from Seville.
The latest piece of distressing news came late Wednesday when the Spanish Civil Guard
confirmed the death of a 34-year-old woman and her three-month baby. They were trying
to drive away from Paiporta, a town in the region of Valencia. Authorities say the worst
of the storm is over, but some parts of the country are still under alert in Calaronia and Dalosia. And here's McGill Macias reporting.
U.S. futures contracts are trading lower at this hour. NASDAQ futures down about 1%.

The Los Angeles Dodgers won their eighth World Series championship after defeating the New
York Yankees in Game 5.
Steve Futterman was there.
The celebration goes on here at Yankee Stadium.
The Dodgers overcome a remarkable five-run deficit to win Game 5 and win the World Series.
New York jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but in the fifth inning, two Yankee errors opened
the door for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers tied the game 5-5, and then in the eighth inning, Los Angeles took the lead,
and right now the Dodgers are being presented with the World Series trophy.
For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman at the World Series in New York.
Meanwhile, in downtown Los Angeles, police clashed with some Dodgers fans
celebrating their team's win
when they threw projectiles and fireworks at police
who were trying to disperse them.
Police say they deemed the crowd an unlawful gathering.
Mayor Karen Bass earlier warned
that violence wouldn't be tolerated.
For the first time, bird flu has been found in a pig.
The Department of Agriculture says the pig was at a farm in Oregon.
The farm is under quarantine, and all five pigs living there were euthanized.
Officials say there's no concern about the country's pork supply, but say it does raise
worries that the virus may be hitting a stepping stone to becoming a bigger threat to humans.
So far, there have been nearly 40 human cases reported around the country with mostly mild symptoms, and all but one had been in contact with an infected
animal.
I'm Janene Herbst, and you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
