Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Rahm. It's the last weekend before Election Day in some parts of the country. Virginia and New Jersey will go to the polls Tuesday to elect a new governor. Former President Barack Obama campaigned in both states yesterday for the Democratic candidates. New York City is electing a new mayor. Many Americans who rely on food stamps will be experiencing delayed payments from SNAP this month because of the federal shutdown. In North Carolina, more than 1.3 million people depend on the program to feed their families.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Eli Chen from member station WUNC reports. While two federal judges ruled on Friday that the Trump administration must fund snap through the shutdown, it could still take days for folks to receive benefits. Maggie Guest is a single mother with two young daughters in Cedar Grove, North Carolina. She says she needs SNAP since she has a disability that prevents her from working. It's my only way to feed my children, to be honest with you. I'm not sure what we're going to do. I don't have a backup plan. Guests expects that she'll have to rely more on food pantries and go further into debt.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Some states are using their own funds to bridge the gap, but North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, a Democrat, would need the cooperation of the state legislature, where Republicans have the majority. For NPR News, I'm Eli Chen in Chapel Hill. President Trump says he's ordered the Pentagon to plan for potential military action in Nigeria in response to violent attacks that the U.S. says amounts to the persecution of Christians there. Nigeria says it welcomes military assistance, but pushback on the claims, saying both Christians and Muslims are affected. NPR's Emmanuel Inquotu reports.
Starting point is 00:01:38 President Trump warned that if Nigeria continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S. military would intervene to, quote, completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities. A Nigerian government spokesperson said, assistance-fighting insurgents was welcome, as long as its sovereignty was respected. This week, the U.S. designated Nigeria a country of particular concern for failing to protect Christians. It centers on attacks in north and central Nigeria, where mass killings by herders against farming communities have displaced millions of people. The plight of majority Christian communities
Starting point is 00:02:11 have led U.S. lawmakers to campaign for their protection. Emmanuel Akimoto, NPR News, Lagos. Two men have been detained after several people were stabbed. on a British train last night. John Lovelis is superintendent of the British Transport Police. He says 11 people were injured, with two of them in life-threatening condition. At approximately 7.42 p.m. yesterday evening, there were calls to the police service in relation to multiple stabbings, which took place on board a train service. The departed Doncaster at 6.25 p.m. and was on route to London Kings Cross Station.
Starting point is 00:02:51 He says at this point in the investigation, there's no evidence that it was a terrorist attack. This is NPR News in Washington. Ukrainian officials say Russian drones attacked the Odessa region of Ukraine's Black Sea coast early this morning. Two people were killed. Russian drones and missiles also hit the Zaporica region, leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power. Russia has launched sustained attacks on Ukraine's power grid as winter of approaching. coaches. The Los Angeles Dodgers have become baseball's first repeat World Series champion since 2000, with a five to four win in 11 innings over the Toronto Blue Jays. Steve Futterman reports from
Starting point is 00:03:34 Toronto. The Toronto Blue Jays were two outs away from victory in the ninth, when the Dodgers normally light-hitting Miguel Rojas hit a tying home run. Drilled the left field and deep and gone. No way. Toronto had a chance to come back and win it in the bottom of the 9th. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with one out, but couldn't get the winning run across. Finally, in the 11th, L.A.'s Will Smith hit another home run. That was the series winner. For the Dodgers, they repeat and can fairly be called a modern baseball dynasty, Dodger manager Dave Roberts. You know, it looked bleak at times, but our guys never wavered, remained steadfast. And when next season begins, the Dodgers are likely to be the favorites to go for three in a row. For NPR news, I'm Steve Futterman at the World Series in Toronto.
