Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. Saturday was the first day of a lapse in funding for the SNAP Food Assistance program. About 42 million Americans around the country rely on it for help. In Houston, more than 400,000 households will be impacted. Houston Public Media, Sydney Jackson reports. With her two dogs, Luna, McKito, and Toe, Itso Perez waited in her car for roughly three hours at a Houston Food Bank distribution site Saturday morning. Born with Spina Bifida, the stay-at-home wife got a call telling her that her benefits had been cut off.
Starting point is 00:00:35 There are other people that cannot work or they have disabilities also, not just other people that they're receiving, but there's other people that are need and probably more in need that I am. Two federal judges have ordered the Trump administration to use emergency funding for SNAP, but it's unclear when benefits could be resumed. From NPR News, I'm Sydney Jackson. voters in California Tuesday will decide the fate of Proposition 50. It's a ballot measure backed by Governor Gavin Newsom that would allow mid-decade redistricting of the state's congressional lines. Newsom and other Democrats say it's needed because of what took place in Texas and other Republican-led states where the legislature and the governor approved plans to give Republicans an advantage in next year's mid-term elections. At a rally Saturday, Newsom criticized President Donald Trump. Thank you for what you'll do over the next 72 hours to bring home this historic victory for democracy for our republic and send a message to Donald Trump. Hell no, we are done. We are done with being treated like this.
Starting point is 00:01:46 In California, redrawing the congressional lines could give Democrats five more House seats. Candidates are making their closing arguments. This in New York City's fierce mayor. election over the weekend. With former Governor Andrew Cuomo facing accusations, his campaign has turned negative. NPR's Brian Mann reports Cuomo trails the Democratic Socialist Zoran Mandani. Polls show Cuomo lagging by double-digit margins, and he's tried to catch up to Mamdani by suggesting the frontrunner would make New York City less safe. Cuomo's attacks drew a rebuke from Reverend Al Sharpton, who appeared at an event with Mamdani Saturday. Don't play us against each other, Sharpton said, though he's stopped short.
Starting point is 00:02:26 endorsing Mamdani, who would be the city's first Muslim mayor. At a stop with a small crowd in Queens, Cuomo said he still has a shot. New Yorkers are turning out in ways we've never seen before. I think they are frightened of a Mondami mayoralty. They spoke at an annual security conference in the Gulf Nation of Bahrain after a paramilitary force seized the last major city in Sudan's Daffar region, killing hundreds. NPR's Lorne Frazier report. In a speech of the annual Manama dialogue, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette, Yvette, Cooper announced another $6.5 million in British humanitarian support. In response to violence in El Fasher, the last major Darfur City to fall to paramilitary
Starting point is 00:03:37 rapid support forces, that's on top of nearly 160 million. The UK is already providing Sudan so far this year, Cooper told the conference. But no amount of aid can resolve a crisis of this magnitude until the guns fall silent. So the world must do more. She called for an immediate ceasefire, citing what she called truly horrifying atrocities in Sudan, including mass executions, starvation, and the use of rape as a weapon of war. Lauren Freyer, NPR News. The ongoing government shutdown continues to cause major disruptions for the nation's air travel system. The aviation tracking system, Flight Aware, says there have been more than 650 cancellation and 2,800 delays just so far this weekend.
Starting point is 00:04:24 airports at major hubs, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles International, and Denver claimed the most cancellations.
