It's finally election day.
Election officials in some states expect to start releasing results soon after the first
polls close at 6 p.m. Eastern Time.
But that's not the case everywhere.
NPR's Hansi Lo Wang reports results may emerge slowly in some swing states where state law
delays the counting of mail-in ballots.
Laws in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin do not allow mail-in ballots to be prepared for
counting until election day.
That can slow down the reporting of election results and lead to a phenomenon called the
Blue Shift or Red Mirage on the Electoral College map.
States that appear to be red with a Republican candidate seemingly in the lead can turn blue
as more localities report their results.
The MIT Election Data and Science Lab found voters in urban, more densely populated communities are more democratic leaning, while smaller,
rural communities are often home to more Republican-leaning voters. Also, Republicans tend to prefer voting
in person, while Democrats have driven the rise of mail-in voting. Election experts say
to see the true colors of this year's electoral map, be patient.

Former President Donald Trump had a full campaign schedule yesterday.
He's doing more last minute campaigning today.
NPR's Danielle Kurtz-Levin reports Trump will also cast his own vote today.
Trump's last days of campaigning have been packed full of events.
He did four rallies across three swing states a day before election day,
ending overnight with a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Trump is planning to vote in Palm
Beach, Florida, and then participate in virtual town halls with voters. That's according to
a campaign official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private plans. Trump
is hosting a watch party at the Palm Beach Convention Center. It will bring to an end
his third and possibly final presidential run. Trump has said he won't run again if he loses. Danielle Kurtzleben, NPR News.
Vice President Kamala Harris crisscrossed the swing state of Pennsylvania yesterday. She
held a rally in Allentown. One of her supporters is Reginald Bellin. He's Haitian American
and works as a public affairs specialist. Bellin says he remembers how Donald Trump acted when his
supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol.
January 6th, I was a staffer.
I was in the building.
I was with my boss, Congressman Gregory Meeks, at the time.
We were locked in there from, you know, when the riot started
until 9 p.m. at night.
I'll never forget that day.
Before that day, I thought I worked in the safest place
in the world and after that day I had to walk around looking over my shoulder as an African
American man. Trump was the one who sent his supporters there. Vice President Harris concluded
her campaigning yesterday with a rally in Philadelphia. Voters in 10 states are deciding
questions about abortion access. Some measures seek to enshrine reproductive rights in state constitutions.
Even in states such as Colorado and New York, abortion there is already protected legally.

Parts of southern Missouri are under flash flood warnings this morning.
The National Weather Service says a few Missouri counties may have gotten up to 8 inches of

More rain is falling today.
Travelers at the airport in Portland, Oregon were surprised to encounter two unusual greeters
recently, an alpaca and a llama, and Piers Kittier Riddle explains. Beni the llama and Captain Jack the alpaca are part of the Portland Airport's animal
therapy program. They usually live on a farm, but they visit the airport every few weeks.
People here say the animals boost their mood, like Sarah Blair, who had been feeling gloomy
after the anniversary of her brother's death.
Sarah Blair, Alpaca's Alpaca It was last Friday. So it's been hanging on
for like a week.
And just real just funky, not my normal,
essentially pretty happy.
And I like being happy and sharing the joy and the smiles.
And these guys, they helped turn it around.
When they're not at the airport, Benny the Llama
and Captain Jack the Alpaca have a busy schedule
making appearances at corporate events and weddings.

The College Football Playoff Committee releases its inaugural rankings for its 12-team playoff
bracket tonight.
It's the first year the field is increasing to 12 Division I teams.
There were only four teams involved over the past decade.
The committee says it expanded the playoff to increase parity and that this offers fans
and alumni more access and excitement in the process.
Previously, teams with even only one loss were more likely to be disqualified from competing
in the playoff.
