Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR news, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Democratic socialists Zaharan Mamdani will be the next mayor of New York City. NPR's Brian Mann says, Mamdani defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. A year ago, Mamdani, who will be New York's first Muslim mayor, was relatively unknown, and Cuomo was a political titan. But last night, it was Mamdani declaring victory. The future is in our hands.
Starting point is 00:00:30 My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty. Cuomo was hobbled in this race by sexual harassment scandals that drove him from office in 2021. In his concession, Cuomo voiced anger at Mamdani's embrace of socialism. We support an economy of jobs, of opportunity, of entrepreneurship. Starting point is 00:01:17 plane crash at Louisville-Mohamed Ali International Airport. Governor Andy Bashir says at least nine people have died. But I'm now fairly confident that that number will grow by at least one. We hope it doesn't grow by too many more. I believe by this afternoon we'll have a pretty good grasp of both the number of fatalities and if there are any the number of missing persons that we're still looking for. Authorities say at least 11 people were injured. Video showed flames on the plane's left wing and a trail of smoke. The aircraft crashed as it was departing for Honolulu. Today, the Supreme Court hears arguments in a case testing whether
Starting point is 00:01:59 President Trump may, acting on his own, impose tariffs under a federal law that does not specify that it covers tariffs or duties on imported goods. NPR's Nina Totenberg reports the president is relying on what he calls his emergency powers. The Supreme Court's conservative supermajority has in the past been receptive to Trump's claims of presidential authority, but most of those Trump victories came in cases involving the so-called emergency docket, allowing Trump policies to take effect on a temporary basis while the litigation played out in the lower courts. The tariff cases are the real thing, with the court having ordered full briefing and expedited arguments.
Starting point is 00:02:39 On its face, Trump's opponents have a strong case, but the court is often reluctant to second-guess presidential determinations on questions of national security. Nina Totenberg, NPR News, Washington. U.S. stocks are trading higher this hour with the Dow up 193 points. This is NPR News. Alabama is joining a host of states and local governments stepping in to help people who lost food aid because of the government shutdown. The Gulf States newsrooms Joseph King reports. $5 million will go to food banks, $2 million from the Emergency Fund and $3 million from the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
Starting point is 00:03:18 $300 would be given to families enrolled in the temporary assistance for needy families program. Jamie Leo is the director of the Christian Service mission, a local nonprofit that assists food banks. Between the government shutdowns, snap benefits, there's just a lot of need out there. Food banks were already low on resources, and so this money will really help them. The Birmingham City Council also voted to release a million dollars of the city's reserves to help people with food needs. For NPR News, I'm Joseph King in Birmingham. Starting point is 00:03:52 This is a Chinese retail giant opens its first physical boutique inside a famed Paris department today. Here's Rebecca Rossman. Outside the Paris department store Bayashvay, two lines formed. One was shoppers eager to enter Sheehan's first flagship store in France, the other with protesters denouncing the ultra-fast fashion brand. Shame on you, they shouted from across the street. Demonstrators accuse Sheehan of labor abuses and environmental harm. Founded in China, the retailer is opening on Bejave's sixth floor.
