He marked the occasion a short time ago at a business forum in Miami where he talked about
Starting point is 00:00:35 a U.S. economy thriving on his watch. It's been really helped a lot by the tariffs. It's been really helped incredibly because this is really a transition period. We went from a horrible, failed country to a tremendous success. It's a transition. Trump also acknowledged Republican losses to Democrats yesterday in a number of key races widely viewed as a rebuke of tariffs and other Trump policies. In GOP reactions to yesterday's setback, Trump urged Senate Republicans at a breakfast this morning to scrap the filibuster, blaming the losses on the government shutdown. Hours later, California Republicans filed a lawsuit challenging voter approval of a redistricting measure that would benefit Democrats. Prop 50 was a Democrat's response to similar initiatives in GOP-led states.
Starting point is 00:01:21 Jewish and Muslim groups are responding to the election of Democratic Socialists, Zarnam Dani, as a next mayor of New York City. Here's NPR's Jason DeRose. The Union for Reform Judaism said in a statement that it would hold the new mayor accountable to his commitments to protect Jewish communities and confront anti-Semitism. Many Jewish leaders had raised concerns
Starting point is 00:01:41 about Mamdani's pro-Palestinian and anti-Zionist positions. The Anti-Defamation League says it's launching a tip line to report Mamdani administration policies and appointments that might affect Jewish New Yorkers. The Council for American Islamic Relations is calling Mamdami's election and historic turning point for Muslims, as well as a rebuke of Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian politics. Jason DeRose, NPR News.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Democrats prevailed in two major gubernatorial races, one in Virginia, the other, New Jersey, where Congresswoman Mikey Sheryl Wahn, she spoke to NPR. The key to my success is ruthless competence. And so we got it done in the campaign. We put together just the biggest, I think, most professional campaign in the state scene. and we saw great results last night, and it feels good. Voters in Missouri's largest school district have approved a four-day school week from member station K-C-U-R.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Here's Jody Fortino. The Independent School District, located in a Kansas City suburb, adopted the shorter week two years ago to attract more teachers amid a statewide shortage. But a new Missouri law requires that larger school districts get voter approval by the next school year to start or continue a four-day week. About a third of the state school districts are participating in a four-day week. as they navigate how to keep educators while struggling with limited resources to raise salaries. Most of the school districts on the shorter week are small and located in rural areas, but the one in independence may push more suburban schools to consider changing their schedule. For NPR News, I'm Jodi Fortino in Kansas City.
Starting point is 00:03:15 The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up more than 300 points. It's NPR News. Following developments on the UPS cargo plane crash in Louisville, Kentucky yesterday. Local authorities say at least nine people died and more than 12 were injured. The plane crashed as it was taking off for Honolulu from UPS World Port
Starting point is 00:03:36 at Louisville-Mohmed Ali International Airport. Supreme Court justices appeared skeptical today of the government's argument that President Trump could bypass Congress to impose tariffs on other countries by using national security as a legal rationale. Both the court's six conservatives and its three liberals sharply questioned
Starting point is 00:03:54 D. John Sauer, the Solicitor General, on President Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Concerns about the spread of bird flu on farms are growing. According to the Department of Agriculture, more than 3 million birds, mostly turkey and chickens, have been affected in the past month. And Pierre's Wolfstone has the latest. States in the middle of the country, especially Minnesota, have seen a big spike. As wild birds migrate, they can cede outbreaks on farms. The virus has not shown up much in dairy cattle in recent months, though scientists say that may be due to
Starting point is 00:04:25 lack of testing. And all of this presents a risk to farm workers. Dr. Nerev Shaw helped lead the bird flu response under President Biden. When it comes to the risk of avian influenza, we're flying blind. Shaw says cutbacks in the federal workforce and the government shutdown have put the country in a precarious situation and make it more likely human cases could go undetected. Meanwhile, farm workers who are often undocumented are reluctant to get tested because of the administration's immigration enforcement. Will Stone and PR News.
