Starting point is 00:00:00 On the ThruLine podcast from NPR, how survivors of the Bosnian genocide got their day in court. How do you even go about finding thousands of victims and establishing who they were and what happened to them? Listen to ThruLine in the NPR app, or wherever you get your podcasts. Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. The Supreme Court has issued and administered. state that temporarily blocks a lower court order forcing the Trump administration to pay out full SNAP food benefits this month. But SNAP recipients in Oregon, California, Wisconsin, and other states are now receiving their full November benefits anyway. The states are using their own funds
Starting point is 00:00:45 for those payments. Oregon Public Broadcasting's Kyra Buckley has more. More than 700,000 Oregon residents woke up to full EBT accounts on Friday. That includes 70-year-old Linda Simon and Eugene, who gets 133 dollars per month. I am one grateful woman today. She says the back and forth on if she would get her benefits has weighed heavily on her mind the last couple weeks. She felt tired and was losing hope. Now I feel a little more energized. You know, I feel like I got a dopamine hit in my brain. Simon plans to restock her kitchen with milk, bread, fruit, and the makings for a good pot, a vegetable soup. For NPR News, I'm Kyra Buckley in Portland. Airlines canceled at least 1,000 flights today to comply with an order from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Starting point is 00:01:34 As NPR's Jill Rose reports, the agency says the cuts are necessary to keep the nation's airspace safe during the government shutdown. The FAA has ordered airlines to phase in these cuts gradually, starting with 4% of flights at high traffic airports this weekend and ramping up to 10% next week. The agency is dealing with staffing shortages of air traffic controllers during the government shutdown. And Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned there could be even bigger cuts ahead. Here he is speaking to Fox News. We're going to have to continue to assess the pressure in the airspace and make decisions that may, again, move us from 10% to 15%, maybe to 20. The FAA wants to cut air traffic at 40 major airports, including Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas.
Starting point is 00:02:15 But the effects will ripple out to many smaller airports with flights that connect to those major hubs. Joel Rose, NPR News, Washington. Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik says she's running for governor of New York. North Country Public Radio's Emily Russell has our story. Stefanik has been hinting at her run for New York governor for months, but on Friday morning, she made it official. After launching her first campaign video, Stefanik appeared on Fox and Friends. New York is in catastrophe because of Kathy Hochel's leadership. So I'm running to always put New York families first.
Starting point is 00:02:47 That's what I've done in 10 years of Congress. In a statement, a spokesperson for Governor Hockel called. called Stefanik a sellout and highlighted her unwavering loyalty to President Trump. New York has long been seen as a solidly blue state, though it saw the biggest swing of Republican voters nationwide in last year's election. For NPR News, I'm Emily Russell in Saranak Lake, New York. Stocks were mixed today. The Dow Jones Industrial Iverage closed up 74 points.
Starting point is 00:03:13 The NASDAQ closed down by 49 points, while the S&P 500 closed up 8 points to 6,728. You're listening to NPR News. Scientist James Watson, who co-discovered the structure of DNA, has died. He was 97 years old. As NPR's now Greenfield Boys reports, his life was full of fame and controversy. James Watson was not yet 25 years old back in 1953, when he and Francis Crick pieced together clues to figure out the chemical structure of DNA.
Starting point is 00:03:48 This historic breakthrough revealed how one molecule could encode so much of life's complexity. Watson's memoir about the discovery was a bestseller, but the book and Watson got a lot of criticism for the shoddy treatment of Rosalind Franklin, a scientist who did key lab research that Watson and Crick relied on. Watson spent his entire career advancing DNA science, But he spent his later years effectively shunned by researchers in the field he pioneered after he made prejudiced remarks about black people, women, and others. Nell Greenfield-Boyce, NPR News. A federal judge in Oregon ruled Friday that the Trump administration failed to meet legal
Starting point is 00:04:34 requirements for deploying National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon. The ruling followed a three-day trial last week. In her opinion, the judge said the administration did not have a... legal basis for deploying the troops because it did not establish that there was a rebellion or a danger of one forming. The administration also did not show that it was unable to enforce the law with regular forces. Stocks finished the week down the first time that's happened in the last month.
