Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jail Snyder. Few signs of progress in breaking the government shutdown stale made. The Senate expected to meet again today after failing to reach a resolution during an unusual Saturday session. Senate Majority Leader John Thune says there's only one way to bring the shutdown to an end. And I urge my colleagues to support a clean continuing resolution so we can start a real discussion to address their health care mess. get back to the regular appropriations process, and above all, finally provide relief to the American people.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Extending health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, the central issue, Senator Thune has called a Democratic proposal for a one-year extension, a non-starter. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer. The leader has said he won't negotiate before. We're willing to negotiate once the credits are extended, plain and simple. And we made that in our proposal yesterday. The shutdown is now in its 40th day.
Starting point is 00:01:02 It has disrupted flights, cut food assistance, and millions of Americans rely on, and left federal workers without pay. Many SNAP recipients going without food assistance has a legal battle over how the Trump administration funds of benefits plays out. From member station KQED in San Francisco, Juan Carlos Laro, reports on the situation in California.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Lisa Marie Fusco is a UC Berkeley student with disabilities who relies on SNAP. She hasn't gotten her. her benefits for the month, but says she's been able to rely on the community around her. I have other students that are sharing, sharing what they have, sharing their food with me, sharing meals and things and supplies, and there's like a really big community effort I'm seeing out here. It's really amazing. But Fusco says she's scared for those who don't have a community to rely on in this time and feels expendable in the eyes of the government. The California Department
Starting point is 00:01:54 of Social Services says benefits may be further delayed, as legal cases play out. For NPR news, I'm Juan Carlos Lata in San Francisco. Officials are warning that more flights could end up being canceled at the shutdown persist and to the Thanksgiving holiday. NPR's Liz Baker reports that possibility is already causing some holiday travelers to reconsider their plans. Air travel is often stressful, especially around the holidays. Aside from the logistics and the money involved, there are a lot of emotions involved in travel. Aixie Diaz is a spokesperson for AAA, which released is a holiday travel forecast before big travel days like the day before Thanksgiving. She says this
Starting point is 00:02:32 year has been tricky to predict given the uncertainty around the government shutdown. Because anything could happen and things change daily. On Friday, Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy warned that by Thanksgiving, as many as 20% of flights could be impacted if the shutdown continues. Many more than have already been affected since the Federal Aviation Administration announced reduced flights to and from 40 major airports earlier this week. Liz Baker, NPR News. Starting point is 00:03:18 at a college campus rally in Utah. Patrick said the idea came during a conversation with turning point leaders. In a statement, he also praised young conservatives for, quote, challenging leftist echo chambers and said campuses should foster debate, not indoctrination. There are more than 1,200 school systems and over 200 colleges in the state, and Patrick says he wants Turning Point USA chapters in all of them. Patrick posted the comments Friday on social media. He's been a frequent guest at Turning Point events in the past few weeks. I'm Jerry Clayton in San Antonio. Israeli Holocaust survivors are marking today's 87th anniversary of Kristallnacht or night of broken glass. 101-year-old Walter Bingham was among those who gathered at the great synagogue in Jerusalem
Starting point is 00:04:05 ahead of the anniversary to share their stories of the 1938 riots when Nazis plundered Jewish businesses and places of worship across Germany. I saw there are lots of people and there was the synagogue smoldering. in fact, because of course, the actual fire was laid very early in the small hours of the morning. In the UK, today is Remembrance Sunday. King Charles led the annual ceremony at London honoring those killed in war. I'm Jail Snyder, NPR News.
