We just got a filing from the special counsel Jack Smith suggesting the process of unwinding these cases has begun. They asked the judge in Washington, DC, Tanya Chutkin, to give them until early December
Starting point is 00:00:59 to offer a status report or an update because of what they called an extraordinary circumstance. This man who's been facing four felony charges in Washington, D.C. is now the president-elect and that runs straight into a long-standing DOJ view that you cannot indict or prosecute a sitting president. That's NPR's Carrie Johnson. There have been several brushfires burning around the New York City metro area because of an unusually dry month for member station WNYC Elizabeth Schway has more on that story.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Air quality in the New York City region is in the red zone meaning unhealthy conditions. This is due to smoke from brush fires mainly in New Jersey but also in Brooklands Prospect Park. Two acres burned on Friday night and injured a firefighter. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has banned grilling in city parks while the city remains in drought conditions. He's urging New Yorkers to take precautions such as not smoking in parks or construction sites and to setting aside yard waste since bundled leaves can be a fire accelerant. Public health officials say older adults, teens, young children, and those who are pregnant should take added precautions.
Starting point is 00:02:05 That means avoiding strenuous activities and limiting time outdoors. For NPR News, I'm Elizabeth Shwe in New York City. Qatar is no longer mediating a possible ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. It's also no longer willing to host the Palestinian group's political office. Throughout the war in Gaza, Qatar, along with Egypt, played a key role in the mediations, but those efforts failed to end the war. NPR's Kat Lonsdorf has more on our story.

The diplomat spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the details of the talks. Hamas did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comment on where its leadership in exile will relocate. Starting point is 00:03:26 According to a decree published on Saturday, the treaty includes a mutual defense provision. Russia's upper house had ratified that treaty this week. The actor Tony Todd has died. He was best known as the star of the Candyman horror movies. His manager says Todd died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 69 years old.
