Federal criminal charges against President-elect Donald Trump will likely be dropped, but the fate of the Georgia election interference case is less clear. Sam Greenglass for Member Station WABE has more.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Trump's two federal cases are unlikely to continue, given long-standing Justice Department policy that sitting presidents can't face prosecution. That would leave the Georgia case as Trump's only outstanding criminal charges. But the case will still likely end up paused until Trump leaves office in 2029. Even if DA Fonny Willis tries to push ahead now with trying to convict Trump on eight felony counts, courts could rule that presidents cannot face even state criminal charges while in office. Willis could still
Starting point is 00:01:05 pursue Trump's 14 co-defendants, who are not subject to presidential pardons. But first, she must overcome efforts from Trump and his co-defendants to remove her from the case for misconduct allegations. For NPR News, I'm Sam Greenglass in Atlanta. Trump's final electoral college total, meanwhile, has reached 312 after the Associated Press called Arizona for Trump Saturday night. Arizona was the only outstanding state. Vice President Kamala Harris meanwhile received 226 votes. With the win in Arizona, Trump won back all of the states flipped by President Biden four
Starting point is 00:01:37 years ago, including Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. Incumbent Democrat Jackie Rosen has won the U.S. Senate race in Nevada. That's according to a race call by the Associated Press, Rosen defeated Republican Sam Brown despite Donald Trump winning the state and PR's Ben Giles reports. Senator Jackie Rosen seems to have benefited from support from organized labor. Abortion was also a key issue both in the Senate race and on the ballot as Nevada voters overwhelmingly approved an amendment creating a right to abortion in the state constitution. Democrats frequently attacked Rosen's opponent, Republican Sam Brown, on the issue, highlighting his past endorsement of a 20-week abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or

But Rosen's win won't have an impact on the balance of power in the Senate, where Republicans have already picked up enough seats to control the chamber for at least the first two years of Trump's second administration. Democratic State Senator Suha Subramaniam won his race in Virginia's 10th district in the rapidly growing DC ex-Serbs. He is no stranger to historic firsts. In 2019, he became the first Indian American elected to the state legislature. On election night, he said it hasn't always been easy. When I first started this, people told me to change my name. It was something people told me, Suhas Subramaniam is not an electable name.
Starting point is 00:04:11 And so, you know, to actually just keep the name and be true to myself and be proud of who I am and my heritage and still be elected to Congress means a lot to me.
