On the Embedded Podcast, every Marine takes an oath to protect the Constitution.
Against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
This is the story of a Marine in the Capitol on January 6.
Did he break his oath?
And what does that mean for all of us?
Listen to A Good Guy on the Embedded Podcast from NPR, both episodes available now. Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm
Janene Herbst. With the AP calling the Arizona race for Donald Trump yesterday, the President
elect has now won seven crucial swing states, giving him 312 electoral votes to Kamala Harris'
226. And now Democrats are trying to figure out how they were beaten
so broadly and decisively. And Piers Meier-Eliason has more.
Compared to 2020, Kamala Harris did worse with almost every voter group, including women.
Was it the fundamentals, high prices and an unpopular president? Or was it Biden's reluctance
to step aside, leaving Harris too little time to develop a persona different from when she ran as a liberal candidate for the Democratic nomination in 2020. How
much did race and gender matter? It was probably all of those things, and now Democrats are
confronting the possibility that there's a political realignment underway, where Republicans
are becoming a multiracial working class party that also gives tax breaks to billionaires
and big corporations. Democrats want to reverse that trend, but first they have to figure out how.

Israel's ousted Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says there's nothing more for the Israeli military
to achieve in Gaza. That's according to a closed-door meeting he had with family members of Israeli
hostages in Gaza on his last day in office.
I'm Piers Katlansdorf, spoke with one of the family members in that meeting.
Giel Dickman's cousin was taken hostage by Hamas last October, along with about 250 others.
She was later killed in Gaza.
Dickman says Gallant spoke plainly about the war at Thursday's meeting.
And what he said is that there's so much that you can do with force.
And they've done it.
He says Gallant also said that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is solely responsible for
holding up a ceasefire deal in July.
NPR has been able to independently verify Dickman's account of the meeting with both
a recording and a transcript.
We also reached out to both Gallant and the prime minister's office.
Neither responded.
Netanyahu fired Gallant last week, saying trust between the two had, quote, eroded.

Global climate negotiations start tomorrow in Azerbaijan, an oil and gas-producing country
that borders Russia and Iran on the Caspian Sea.
MPR's Michael Copley reports for these world leaders, especially in developing countries,
raising more money to deal with global warming is at the top of this year's agenda.
Wealthy countries are responsible for a lot of the climate pollution that's raising global
temperatures.
But it's their poorer neighbors that are suffering some of the worst impacts.
So industrialized countries pledged money to help, and they're due to set a new funding
target before next year.
That's what will be negotiated in Azerbaijan.
But money's been slow getting to where it's needed most, and whatever's promised will
almost certainly be a fraction of what's needed.
Donald Trump's reelection is creating more uncertainty, raising questions about the U.S.'s
role in future climate initiatives.

This is NPR News. The U.S. and Mexico have agreed
to amend a 1944 Water Treaty. Texas Public Radio's Jerry Clayton reports, officials say the move will
ensure more regular water from Mexico amid drought conditions. Officials celebrated the signing of
the amendment which could bring some relief to south texas farmers who've been experiencing a severe drought the
international water and boundary commission said saturday that the
agreement gives mexico more options to meet its water deliveries to the u.s.
mexico is required to send 1.75 million acre feet of water from the rio grand to
the u.s. over a five-year cycle, but they have not fully delivered recently due to the drought.
Officials say the new agreement will provide greater reliability
and predictability for all water users in the region
and will improve water quality.

At the weekend box office, Venom, the last dance,
took the top spot for the third weekend
in a row with an estimated $16 million in ticket sales.
That film has grossed $279 million domestically and $394 million globally.
In second place, the feel-good holiday movie The Best Christmas Pageant Ever with $11 million.
In third place, the horror film Heretic with $11 million. In third place, the horror film Heretic with
$11 million. That film, though, was made for less than $10 million. Rounding out the top
five, The Wild Robot with $6 million and the horror film Smile, too, with $5 million. Overall
ticket sales, though, do remain sluggish.
I'm Janene Herbst, and you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
