Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Giles Snyder. The final undecided state in the 2024 presidential
election has been won by President-elect Donald Trump. The Associated Press called in the race
for Arizona last night giving Trump 312 electoral votes overall as NPR's Ben Giles reports.
Trump secured enough electoral college votes to become president-elect early
Wednesday morning, but a win in Arizona redeems Trump in a state he narrowly lost four years ago
to President Biden. In fact, Trump has now won back all the states Biden flipped for Democrats
in 2020, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and now Arizona. Trump's Arizona
victory also means he swept the seven key swing states.
Down the ballot, Arizona's Senate race still remains too close to call, with hundreds of
thousands of ballots left to count.
Ben Giles, NPR News, Phoenix.
President-elect Trump is expected at the White House on Wednesday.
The administration says he will meet with President Biden in the Oval Office for the
customary meeting between the outgoing and incoming president.
In 2020, then-President Trump did not host Biden after Trump lost his re-election bid.
There have been several brushfires burning around the New York City metro area because
of an unusually dry month.
From member station WNYC, Elizabeth Shwe has more.
Air quality in the New York City region is in the red zone, meaning unhealthy conditions.
This is due to smoke from brush fires, mainly in New Jersey, but also in Brooklyn's Prospect
Park.
Two acres burned on Friday night and injured a firefighter.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has banned grilling in city parks, while the city remains
in drought conditions.
He's urging New Yorkers to take precautions, such as not smoking in parks or construction Eric Adams has banned grilling in city parks while the city remains in drought conditions.
He's urging New Yorkers to take precautions, such as not smoking in parks or construction
sites and to setting aside yard waste since bundled leaves can be a fire accelerant.
Public health officials say older adults, teens, young children, and those who are pregnant
should take added precautions.
That means avoiding strenuous activities and limiting time outdoors. For NPR News, I'm Elizabeth Shui in New York City. Firefighters in
Southern California are taking advantage of favorable weather conditions gaining
ground on the mountain fire. Evacuation orders have been downgraded to warnings
in several areas of Ventura County. The fire has destroyed dozens of homes.
Relatives of hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza were on the streets of Tel Aviv this
weekend marking the 400th day of captivity.
Israeli authorities say of the 101 hostages still in Gaza, about a third are confirmed
dead.
The U.S., Egypt and Qatar have been working for months to bring about a third are confirmed dead. The US, Egypt, and Qatar have been working for months
to bring about a ceasefire deal that would free the hostages, but Qatar has announced
that it is suspending its mediation efforts between Hamas and Israel. Qatar says the efforts
will remain stalled until there is a willingness to resume. This is NPR. Russian officials
say they have fought off a major Ukrainian drone attack. Moscow's mayor says more than 30 drones were shot down over the city's outskirts.
And the defense ministry says air defenses destroyed another three dozen over other regions
of Western Russia.
The attack rattled Moscow and halted traffic at some of Russia's busiest airports.
At least one person was hurt.
President-elect Trump has said that he would bring peace to Ukraine, but has given few
details.
He spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week.
More than 100,000 people marched in the Spanish city of Valencia on Saturday to express their
anger at how authorities handled recent catastrophic floods.
The floods killed more than 200 people.
Demonstrators chanted and carried placards accusing Valencia's regional government of being
stained with blood. Its head Carlos Mazón is facing mounting pressure to
resign. Here's the BBC's Guy Hedgego in Valencia. They say that Carlos Mazón
didn't respond in time when the the flood waters were already rising. He
didn't react quickly enough, decisively enough on the day itself.
Some people are also angry with the central government as well
and the lack of resources being rolled out.
But this protest in particular, it's Carlos Maffon,
who's really bearing the brunt of people's anger.
The Hall of Fame NASCAR driver Bobby Allison has died,
a family statement released by NASCAR says Allison died this weekend
at his home in North Carolina he was 86. Allison was a five-time NASCAR champion and a three-time
