Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janene Herbst. The White House and the Senate will be in Republican control next year, but the key question is which party will have control of the House of Representatives. For now, it seems the Republicans will retain control with a narrow majority, so if that happens it would give them control of the White House, the Senate, and possibly the House too. NPR's Barbara Scrunn says a unified government would give the GOP the opportunity to aggressively pursue and pass a very partisan agenda.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Trump will be leading a lot of the policy agenda and this Congress will be in charge of executing that agenda. And that's very different than what has been going on, which was Republican members debating and choosing an opposition strategy against Democrats in the White House. And here's Barbara Sprunt. Several key House races are yet to be called. President-elect Trump will meet with President Biden in the Oval Office on Wednesday. Exit polls showed Trump again received major support from white Christians this election season. And here's Jason DeRose reports the Republican candidate also made inroads with Hispanic Catholics as well as other cultural and major support from white Christians this election season. And here's Jason DeRose reports, the
Starting point is 00:01:05 Republican candidate also made inroads with Hispanic Catholics as well as other cultural and religious groups. Jason DeRose A little more than half of Hispanic Catholics voted for Donald Trump. That's far more than in the past. Just four years ago, only about a third of Hispanic Catholics voted for him. The shift this year appears to have been motivated by economic reasons. A national exit poll from the Council on American-Islamic Relations found Green Party candidate Jill Stein getting 53% of the Muslim vote. Trump got 21% and Kamala Harris received 20%.
Starting point is 00:01:36 That's after an intense campaign to turn Muslims away from the Democratic ticket due to the Biden administration's handling of the war between Israel and Hamas. Other data about 80% of white evangelicals voted for Trump and about 80% of Jews voted for Harris. Jason DeRose, NPR News. Russia says its air defense downed more than 30 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow, injuring at least one civilian. The attacks appear to be Kiev's largest on the Russian capital since the Kremlin launched its initial invasion of Ukraine two and a half years ago. Empress Charles Maynes has more.
Starting point is 00:02:10 The drone attacks forced the temporary shutdown of three of Moscow's four main airports with passenger flights diverted or delayed. Social media posts also appear to show several houses on the outskirts of the city that caught fire from fell debris. Russia's defense ministry says its air defenses destroyed another 36 drones over regions of western Russia. While the Ukrainian capital Kiev is regularly targeted by Russian drone and missile strikes, Ukrainian responses have mostly focused on Russian energy infrastructure. Attacks on Moscow are relatively rare. Two Ukrainian drones struck buildings inside the Kremlin walls in May of 2023, after which President Vladimir Putin ordered his top brass to beef up the city's air defenses.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Charles Maynes, NPR News. One of the all-time great NASCAR drivers has died. Bobby Allison was 86 years old. You're listening to NPR News from Washington. In Maryland, a federal judge has set the date for when parties suing the owners of the ship that hit and collapsed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore last spring will have their moment in court. Scott Masione from Member Station WYPR has more.
Starting point is 00:03:15 The initial trial is set for June 2026. That proceeding will only determine if Grace Ocean Private, which owns the Dali, will be eligible for limited liability. The company is asking the courts to limit its payout to $44 million. After that case is resolved, another trial will be scheduled to determine how much Grace Ocean will have to pay out to the victims. The ship destroyed the Key Bridge, killing six construction workers on the bridge at the time.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Baltimore, the state of Maryland, multiple businesses, and the families of those killed are among those suing. Grace Ocean has already settled its suit with the U.S. Justice Department for the cleanup costs of the Key Bridge collapse for more than $100 million. For NPR News, I'm Scott Massione in Baltimore. An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 has shaken eastern Cuba. This on the heel of hurricanes and blackouts left many on the island reeling. The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicenter was located
Starting point is 00:04:11 approximately 25 miles south of Barto Lomé, Maso. Rumbling was felt around the east and bigger cities like Santiago de Cuba. There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Hurricane Rafael ripped through the western part of Cuba on Wednesday as a Category 3 storm. Strong winds knocked out power island-wide and destroyed hundreds of structures, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate.
