President-elect Donald Trump has cemented
his victory in Tuesday's election. All seven swing states are now in his column after the
Associated Press called Arizona in his favor last night. A post-election analysis has found
that Trump's victory was fueled in part by support from working and middle-class voters.
He also overperformed with black and Latino men, all core constituencies for Democrats. NPR's Windsor Johnson looks at how
Democrats are responding. Donald Trump made significant inroads with middle and
working-class voters across racial lines. Daniel Ho Sang is an American Studies
professor at Yale University. He says Democrats messaging was off and they
need to regroup before the next election.
I think that Democrats have to figure out that policy and the delivery of policy isn't
the same as speaking to people's deep anxieties about the future and need to find a way to
kind of bridge that gap so that they're not just talking about policy but talking about
how people are feeling and what can be done differently. About two-thirds of voters considered the U.S. economy in poor shape compared with about
half of voters in 2020.

Firefighters in Southern California taking advantage of favorable weather conditions,
gaining ground on the mountain fire thanks to winds that have eased and why in Walbrunn
and the National Weather Service says conditions should continue to improve today.
We expect another very favorable day, light winds coming off of the ocean or an onshore
breeze.
That will keep temperatures in the low 70s, humidity values roughly 15 to 20 percent.
Evacuation orders have been downgraded to warnings in several areas of Ventura County.
The fire has destroyed dozens of homes.
In the Northeast, brush fires are impacting air quality,
multiple fires burning in New Jersey,
where Bill Donley is the chief
of the State Forest Fire Service.
He blames dry conditions.
It's up to Mother Nature.
You know, when she brings the rain, we'll take a break.
But until we see that, I don't see any break in sight.
Donley says hiking trails in state parks have been closed because of the fires.
The second final day of a meeting of African foreign ministers getting underway at the
Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.
A growing number of African governments cutting ties with traditional Western allies and looking
to Moscow instead, as the BBC's Will Ross reports.
Speaking at the summit in Sochi, Burkina Faso's foreign minister described Russia as a more
suitable partner than the former colonial power France.
Like Niger and Mali, Burkina Faso has invited in Russian troops to help stop jihadist attacks.
It hasn't worked.
Rwanda is one of several African countries that have already signed deals with Russia
to get help building a nuclear power plant.
Five years ago Vladimir Putin
promised a double trade with Africa. That hasn't happened, but using other means which
the West sees as destabilising the continent, Russia's influence has grown significantly.

In Alabama, celebrations marking Tuskegee University's 100th homecoming have been marred by gunfire.
Video posted on social media show people ducking behind a vehicle while gunshots go off. Tuskegee
confirms that one person is dead and several students were injured.
The lingering major question following Tuesday's election is which party will control the House?
Several key races have yet to be decided. In
Virginia, though, the state will soon have its first South Asian member of Congress. Margaret
Barthel from Member Station WAMU has more. Democratic State Senator Suha Subramaniam won
his race in Virginia's 10th District in the rapidly growing DC ex-Serbs. He is no stranger
to historic firsts. In 2019, he became the first Indian American
elected to the state legislature. On election night, he said it hasn't always been easy.
When I first started this, people told me to change my name. It was something people told me
Suha Subramaniam is not an electable name. And so, you know, to actually just keep the name
and be true to myself and be proud of who I am and my heritage and still be elected to
Congress means a lot to me.
In January, Supermanyam will be one of six members of Indian origin now serving in the
House.

Officials in South Carolina say one of the more than 40 monkeys that escaped from a lab
last week has been recovered safely.
Police say in a statement that many of the others are located within a few yards of the facility and efforts to recover them are ongoing.
The monkeys bred for medical research escaped Wednesday after an employee at the lab did
not fully lock a door as she checked on them.
