JANINE HERST Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine
Herst. As President Biden's term winds down, his national security adviser, Jake Sullivan,
says Biden will use the last two and a half months to continue to push for a Gaza ceasefire
and Ukrainian aid.
President Biden made clear when President Zelensky was here in Washington a couple of
months ago that we would spend all of the resources that were provided to us by the Congress on time and in full,
meaning that by January 20th, we will have sent the full amount of resources and aid to Ukraine
that Congress has authorized.
Speaking there to CBS's Face the Nation, Sullivan says Biden will have the opportunity to make the case
to Congress and the incoming Trump administration that the U.S. shouldn't walk away from Ukraine.
Meanwhile, President-elect Trump and President Biden
will meet in the Oval Office on Wednesday.
People who say they voted for Trump in the election
are spelling out their priorities
for their Republican leader.
Chuck Hornbach of member station WUWM has more.
Brian Ortiz is a native of Puerto Rico
who now works construction jobs in Milwaukee.
He joined nearly 1.7 million other people in Wisconsin voting for Donald Trump, helping the
Republican to a victory of less than one percentage point here over Vice President Kamala Harris.
Ortiz says his top request for Trump is for the nation to reduce overseas spending
and provide more help for U.S. residents.
We should go about our people first, America first.
That's why I voted for Trump so he can make the country great again.
On Friday, Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Call, a Democrat, vowed he would help protect
the rights of the state's citizens, if need be, against Trump administration policies.
For NPR News, I'm Chuck Quirmbach in Milwaukee.
In Amsterdam, dozens of people have been arrested for holding a pro-Palestinian protest in violation
of a ban imposed by the mayor after violent incidents last week.
Tara Schultz reports that restriction has now been extended to Thursday as a result.
Pro-Palestinian activists in Amsterdam defied the prohibition on protests and many were taken away by police.
One reason organizers called for the demonstration was to protest what they say has been unfair framing by the media and officials of
the attacks on Israeli soccer fans Thursday night. This is Eden.
She didn't want to give her last name out of concern for being identified for violating
the ban.
There were four days of bigotry and hatred that just was not covered and the police did
nothing but as you can see right now we have huge police presence.
Amsterdam city officials confirm Israeli soccer fans defiled Palestinian flags and shouted
taunts about death and destruction in Gaza. But they emphasize that nothing
justifies the anti-Semitic attacks which followed. For NPR News, I'm Terri Schultz.
And you're listening to NPR News from Washington. NASCAR says Bobby Allison, one
of the sports winningest drivers, died yesterday at the
age of 86. Andrew Yeager from Member Station WBHM reports Allison's three-decade career
helped change the sport he loved.
In a 2019 interview with WBHM, Allison said he caught the racing bug when, as a kid in
South Florida, his grandfather took him to a track. Come on Bobby, we're going to the car races. And I saw that car race at age 10, I guess,
and really, really was enthused.
Allison eventually settled near Birmingham, where he was part of a group of drivers known
as the Alabama Gang. A fierce competitor, Allison was a three-time winner at Daytona,
four-time winner at Talladega, series champion in 1983, and won a total of 85 races. His 1979 fight with two other drivers raised
the profile of NASCAR. Then during a 1987 race at Talladega, he survived a wild
crash which pushed the sport to require restrictor plates to slow down cars. For
NPR News, I'm Andrew Yeager in Birmingham. At the weekend box office, Venom, The Last Dance took the top spot for the third weekend
in a row with an estimated $16 million in ticket sales.
The film has grossed $279 million domestically.
In second place, the feel-good holiday movie, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, with $11
million.
In third place, the horror film Heretic, with $11 million, but that film was made for less than $11 million. In third place, the horror film Heretic with $11 million, but
that film was made for less than $10 million. Rounding out the top five, The Wild Robot
and the horror film Smile Too. I'm Janene Herbst, and you're listening to NPR News from
Washington.
