A group of Senate Democrats have defected to agree to a deal of Republicans
that could reopen federal agencies and end the government shutdown.
But as NPR's Claudia Grasolos reports,
the plan still has a long way to go before it can clear both chambers of Congress.
In the end, seven rank-in-file Senate Democrats
and one independent joined Republicans to vote yes to move forward on the bipartisan plan.
They say includes a list of wins.
The bipartisan package includes a stopgap measure to fund the government.
through the end of January and includes full appropriations funding plans for some government
services and agencies, including agriculture and veterans affairs. The deal pauses plan cuts to
snap, reverses federal worker layoffs conducted during the shutdown and installs new protections
from more cuts to that workforce through the end of January. Most Senate Democrats, however,
voted no. And House Democrats say they're against it because the plan does not address the
Affordable Care Act's higher premiums.

Concern is growing about ice agents using so-called riot control weapons while making arrests.
Activists in Chicago say a local family was pepper sprayed by federal immigration agents during a raid this weekend.
State and local lawmakers are condemning the actions.
State Senator Selina Villanovo calls its state-sponsored terrorism.
We don't have what ICE and CBP has.
We don't have tear gas.
We don't have pepper spray.
We literally have our bodies.
and whistles. On Friday, ice agents in Evanston, Illinois, used pepper spray and pointed weapons
at bystanders while making another arrest. The head of the BBC resigned on Sunday following
criticism that the broadcaster doctored a soundbite of President Trump. Vicki Barker has more
from London. In a BBC documentary about the January 6th storming of the Capitol building, a Donald
Trump soundbite had the president telling supporters he was going to walk to the Capitol with them to,
quote, fight like hell. But the producers had spliced out what Trump said next that he wanted to
help his supporters, quote, peacefully and patriotically make their voices heard. The alleged doctoring,
along with allegations of bias in BBC coverage of Gaza and trans issues, had put management
under growing pressure in recent weeks. Now, the controversy has claimed the job of the BBC's
Director General Tim Davy, as well as that of Head of News, Deborah Terness.
For NPR News, I'm Vicky Barker in London.

His family had waged a public campaign for 11 years to have his remains returned.
The remains of four hostages killed in the Hamas attack on October 7, 2020.
are still in Gaza.

President Trump was met with booze on Sunday
as he attended the NFL game between the Washington commanders
and the Detroit Lions.
He was there to swear in members of the military
during an on-field enlistment ceremony.
He's the first sitting president
to attend a regular season NFL game in almost 50 years.
The commanders lost the game, 44 to 22.
The FAA has ordered the grounding of all MD-11 aircraft
after the deadly UPS crash in Kentucky last week.
MP's Chondolice Duster has more on what this means for consumers.
FedEx and UPS grounding their MD-11 aircraft could have an impact on holiday deliveries,
aviation experts say.
The MD-11 aircraft are a small part of UPS and FedEx fleets, but carry thousands of packages each.
Mike Stangle of Aerodynamic Advisory says delivery impacts could depend on how long the aircraft are grounded.
If it only lasts a few days, then we shouldn't see much of an impact on, you know, holiday, you know, package deliveries and things like that.
UPS and FedEx say contingency plans are in place to minimize disruption and deliveries.
Aviation experts say holiday shoppers should plan to ship packages early to ensure gifts arrive on time.

Three-time basketball Hall of Fame inductee Lenny Wilkins has died.
He was 88 years old.
Wilkins was honored as both a player and a coach.
He was known as one of the best point guards of his era, and he coached 2,487 NBA games.
That's a record that still stands.
And Wilkins was also inducted as part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team
and coached the Olympic team to a gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
