President-elect Donald Trump says he plans to nominate former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee to be the next U.S. ambassador to Israel. Israeli officials are welcoming the move, as NPR's Michelle Kelliman reports. Mike Huckabee is an evangelical Christian who leads tour groups to Israel and defends Israeli settlements in the West Bank, calling them communities and neighborhoods and refusing to use the word occupation. President Trump says Hakebi loves Israel. The Israeli ambassador to the UN, Denny Denon, calls Hakebi a dear friend.

Already a conservative group has published a watch list of what it calls subversive leftist bureaucrats who cannot be trusted to enforce immigration laws. Starting point is 00:02:09 The threat of politicizing the federal workforce threatens the ability of the government to serve everybody equally and fairly. Trump is expected to revisit a previous effort to eliminate protections for federal employees in policy-related positions. Andrea Hsu, NPR News. The FAA is banning U.S. air carriers from Haiti. As NPR's Ada Peralta reports, at least two U.S. aircraft have been struck by gunfire after landing in Haiti. Haiti is in the middle of another chapter of political instability. Starting point is 00:02:48 Prime Minister. A new Prime Minister has taken over but gangs have been rampaging across neighborhoods in the capital Port-au-Prince. On Monday as two American planes approached the runway at the airport the planes faced gunfire. A flight attendant was injured on a Spirit Airlines flight which was diverted to the Dominican Republic, and a JetBlue plane only found out it was hit when it was inspected in New York. The ban will remain in place for 30 days. Eder Peralta, NPR News, Mexico City. This is NPR. A former Massachusetts Air National Guardsman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Starting point is 00:03:25 22-year-old Jack Deshera has pleaded guilty and apologized for leaking classified military documents about the war in Ukraine. He had faced 30 years to life behind bars. Deshera has been in custody since his arrest last year. Trailblazing jazz musician and drummer Roy Haynes has died at the age of 99. His music career spanned more than eight decades from the swing and bebop eras to the en vante garde. As NPR's Eric Westervelt reports, Haynes was one of the last pioneers of modern jazz.
Starting point is 00:03:58 You could hear why Roy Haynes' nickname was Snap Crackle and the rapid fire snare drum and innovative rhythms that helped change the direction of jazz improvisation. Many credit Haynes with helping transition jazz drumming from the sedate predictable techniques of the big band era to the more free-flowing rhythms of b-bop and beyond. Haynes played with just about all of the greats from Lester Young to Chick Corea and generations of younger players he inspired with his energy, creativity and mastery. Eric Westervelt and PR News. Wall Street stocks closed lower today with the Dow Jones Industrial falling 382 points, the Nasdaq Composite Index lost 17 points, and the S&P 500 lost 17.
