Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor-Johnston.
Republicans are on the cusp of retaining control of the House, which would give the GOP a trifecta
come January, control over both chambers of Congress and the White House.
Speaker Mike Johnson says it's time to move on and turn the page in the next Congress.
This is something that the American people desperately need and deserve.
We are going to raise an America First banner above this place.
And you saw a demographic shift that I was talking about on the campaign trail for over
a year who came on board with us because they believed in what we were saying.
They believed the answers that we were providing for all the great challenges facing the country.
Johnson says he's planning to spend the weekend at Mar-a-Lago to iron out details on the plans
ahead.
President-elect Donald Trump says he plans to nominate Mike Huckabee as the U.S. ambassador
to Israel.
Huckabee is a longtime supporter of Israel and a critic of the Biden administration's
handling of the war in Gaza. Saudi Arabia has hosted leaders from the Middle East and Muslim-majority countries for a summit.
They ended with a statement calling for a halt of global arms shipments to Israel and
for its suspension at the United Nations.
NPR's Ayeh Betraoui reports the summit did not commit nations to abide by specific measures.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman opened the summit by reaffirming support for a Palestinian
state denouncing Israeli attacks on Iran and accusing Israel of carrying out a quote genocide
in Gaza, which Israel denies. Arab leaders, many of whom are opposed to Hamas, have been
divided on how to contain the war, which
has spread to Lebanon.
And countries like Egypt and the UAE
have kept ties with Israel, even using
their ports for Israeli shipments throughout the war.
The summit is the second of its kind
to be held in Riyadh since the Hamas-led attacks of last year
that killed 1,200 people in Israel.
Israel's military has since killed at least 43,000 Palestinians,
most of them women and children, according to Gaza's health ministry.

The United Kingdom has set a new target at a global climate conference to slash greenhouse
gas emissions, fueling global warming. NPR's Michael Copley reports the country is using
climate initiatives to try to boost
economic development.
The UK aims to cut heat-trapping emissions by 81 percent in the next decade compared
to levels in 1990.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer made the announcement at United Nations climate negotiations in
Azerbaijan.
Activists cheered the news, saying the UK is claiming a leadership role in global climate
efforts.
The UK government also announced incentives to build up domestic supply chains for the
offshore wind industry.
Starmer said the UK aims to be a leader in what he called the economy of tomorrow.

This is NPR News from Washington.
A judge in New York City has postponed a decision on the future of the hush money case against
President-elect Trump.
He was convicted of falsifying business records to cover up money paid to an adult film star
ahead of the 2016 election.
But the court is now weighing whether the conviction stands in light of the Supreme
Court's ruling on presidential immunity.
Legal experts say it's unclear when or if the judge will proceed with the sentencing.
This year's inductees into the Toy Hall of Fame have been announced.
My Little Pony and the card game Phase 10 are among them.
NPR's Elizabeth Blair has more.
It's a career-defining moment in the life of a toy.
My Little Pony was a finalist seven times before winning a spot in the Toy Hall of Fame. The competition is always stiff and includes both branded and generic toys. This year's finalists
included Pokemon Trading Cars and the Trampoline. The other two inductees this year are the card
game Phase 10 and the Transformers
action figures, you know, the ones that spawned a massive multimedia industry.
The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York established the Toy Hall of Fame in 1998.
The museum says the final selections are informed by historians, educators, and other experts in
learning, creativity, and discovery. A spokesperson says no toy companies are involved in the process.
