Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korova Coleman. House Republicans are gearing up to implement President-elect Donald Trump's legislative agenda. Trump met with the GOP conference ahead of their unanimous vote yesterday to reelect Mike Johnson as incoming speaker.
Starting point is 00:00:35 NPR's Barbara Sprunt reports this comes as Republicans are poised to retain control of the House. Speaker Johnson credited Trump's visit to the conference with setting the tone for what he called a productive day. It was a bit of a pep rally. Everybody feels very confident, very encouraged about the days ahead. And he gave us a very inspirational message.
Starting point is 00:00:54 And he talked about the importance of maintaining unity and standing with this leadership team to go forward. GOP lawmakers spent the day electing their new leadership team and reacting to the news that Florida member Matt Gaetz is being tapped as Trump's attorney general. Johnson said Gaetz gave him his resignation letter, effective immediately. Barbara Sprint and PR News, Washington. President-elect Trump also says he'll nominate former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard to be the director of national intelligence.
Starting point is 00:01:21 She's a former lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve and a former presidential candidate. In Israel, a court has rejected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request to delay his corruption trial amid war. Netanyahu will testify in court on December 2nd as NPR's Daniel Estrin reports from Tel Aviv. Netanyahu's lawyers argued he didn't have enough time to prepare his testimony because of the wars with Hamas and Hezbollah. The judges in his case said they gave Netanyahu five months to prepare and that the circumstances of the war had not changed significantly to justify a delay. The trial has lasted more than four years and concerns his alleged dealmaking with media
Starting point is 00:01:58 moguls for positive press coverage. In a new development, Israeli authorities are investigating Netanyahu's inner circle. Crisis hotlines serving the LGBTQ plus community have become overwhelmed following last week's election with phone calls from people concerned about physical and mental health. And Bears Windsor-Johnston spoke to an influencer trying to help members of
Starting point is 00:02:30 the LGBTQ community. 43 year old Mia Bertrand is a bisexual black woman who creates content on TikTok for a living. She says she's received a number of threats before and after the election. I have gotten it from the racist side as well as the homophobic side. It's hard to understand that people just hate you for who you love or how you were born. The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention organization that serves the LGBTQ plus community is reporting a spike in calls to its hotline. The group says calls increased by 700% the day after the election from some young people

They warn it could become Tropical Storm Sarah, a new animated show that premieres today on PBS Kids, introduces children and families to a main character with autism. The network says Carl the Collector is its first program featuring central characters who are neurodivergent. NPR's Kristen Wright has more.

The show follows the adventures of Carl the Collector, a raccoon who has autism and loves to collect things, from bottle caps to fake mustaches. Carl's ability to pay very close attention to detail helps him think of great ideas. His friends are neurodivergent like him and neurotypical. Groups like the National Autism Association have been pushing for representation on screen
Starting point is 00:04:08 for a long time, says co-founder Lori McElwain. The more that it's out there, the more you know we're going to learn from from the very early age about you know the importance of accepting and embracing those differences. The NBA San Antonio Spurs say that Hall of Fame coach Greg Popovich suffered a mild stroke
Starting point is 00:04:39 earlier this month. He has stepped away to focus on his health, and it's not been announced when he will return.
