Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear. President Joe Biden is in South America
for the last major summit of his presidency.
Biden has been holding bilateral meetings with world leaders
at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Meeting.
Tomorrow, he sits down with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
And Spear's Asmohal is traveling with the president.
Biden came into office
pledging that America was back on the international stage.
He has worked during his presidency to strengthen alliances and Biden's national security advisor,
Jake Sullivan, says that is the same vision he's taking here, that these partnerships
are critical to U.S. national security.
But we should point out that Trump does not have the same commitment to working with allies.
He has campaigned on a sort of go-it-alone strategy.
NPR's Asma Hallow, the annual APEC summit brings together leaders from 21 economies
that jointly account for almost two-thirds of global GDP and roughly half of the world's
trade.
A House Democrat from New York is pushing back against recent comments by President-elect
Trump suggesting he may try running for a third term as president.
Sen. Pierce Homsley the wrong reports the U.S. Constitution bans a person from being elected
president more than two times.
On his first return to Washington D.C. since winning his second presidential election,
President-elect Donald Trump told a group of House Republicans, quote, I suspect I won't
be running again unless you say he's so, we've got to figure something else out."
That prompted Democratic representative Dan Goldman
of New York to introduce a house resolution
to reaffirm that the 22nd Amendment applies to Trump.
He likes to float these ideas,
which he can claim are jokes,
and then they become normalized
and they turn from jokes to reality.
The resolution is not expected to go to a vote in the Republican controlled house,
but Goldman says he wants to remind everyone the 22nd Amendment says,
quote, no person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.

President-elect Trump has picked longtime aid and campaign spokeswoman
Caroline Levitt to be his White House press secretary.
At 27 years old, she will be the youngest person ever to hold the position.
More on that in a moment. Caroline Levitt has become a prominent face on the Trump
team. She recently served as national press secretary for the campaign and
previously worked as an aide in Trump's first administration. Just two years ago
she also ran for Congress in a competitive district back in her
home state of New Hampshire and failed to unseat the Democratic incumbent. Now, instead of being
one of the first members of Gen Z to serve in Congress, she will be the first Gen Z White House
Press Secretary. Elena Moore, NPR News, Washington. Federal Reserve officials out with a lengthy
defense of the need for the central bank to
remain independent.
Fed board member Adriana Kugler saying economic research shows an independent central bank
does a better job of keeping inflation low.
On Wall Street today, the Dow is down more than 300 points.

Hundreds of workers on the Las Vegas strip are off the job today.
A strike by the Culinary Workers' Union, which represents about 60,000 hospitality workers across the state,
including the 700 who went on strike today against Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas.
Housekeepers, cocktail waitresses, porters, bellmen, and others took to the picket lines.
The union says it's trying to win pay raises and benefits it's obtained for other members in Las Vegas. Comedian, writer and former late night host Conan O'Brien will host the 97th Academy Awards
ceremony in March. NPR's Mandolito Barco has more.
Conan O'Brien announced the news on social media,
gushing into the camera and holding the golden statuette.
I've been handed an Oscar. I'm hosting.
Yes. I'm an Oscar host.
Exactly.
Oh, but do I still get to keep the Oscar?
With his self-deprecating humor, O'Brien has entertained audiences for years as a writer
for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons and also hosting the talk shows Late Night with
Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, and Conan.
He's brought along viewers as he traveled the world and he hosts a podcast. Now for the first time he'll be emceeing and
introducing Hollywood stars at the Academy Awards.
