President-elect Donald Trump has put forth a number of proposals that could affect Social
Security in the coming years.
Piers Windsor-Johnson reports some Americans are worried that Trump's agenda could put
their monthly checks at risk.
Social Security is already headed for a shortfall.
Trump's proposals to make it more solvent include eliminating taxes on tips and imposing more tariffs. Charles Blahhouse specializes in Social Security
at George Mason University. He says Trump's plan to end taxation on Social
Security benefits would hurt the program the most.
It would worsen it but if you weren't worried before you shouldn't be that much
worried about this because you know the incremental worsening of program
finances would be small relative to the whole that we've already been living with.
Any changes to Social Security's tax structure would require 60 votes in the Senate, meaning
that Republicans would need at least some Democrats on board.

President Biden's in Peru meeting with several world leaders, including Chinese President
Xi Jinping.
NPR's Asma Khalid reports on what's expected to be their final big summit before Biden
leaves office.
There are two main missions for this meeting.
One is that Biden wants to cement the policy cooperation he feels he's been able to achieve
in this relationship over the course of the last four years, you know, work to stop the
flow of fentanyl, coordination on climate issues, and discussions around the
challenges of artificial intelligence.
But I would say most importantly, the other main mission here is to emphasize that it
is important to keep the lines of communication open, particularly the lines of military-to-military
cooperation.
NPR's Asma Khalid reporting.
The group Human Rights Watch has released a wide-ranging
report on the mass displacement of Palestinians in Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. Says Israel's
using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza. NPR's Ruth Sherlock says the report captures how Gazans
are being forced to survive in desperate conditions and with little access to food. The Human Rights
Watch report says according to the laws of war, Israel is required to
ensure the health, nutrition and safety of the population it displaces in its conflict
with Hamas.
Israel, though, has dramatically restricted what aid can enter Gaza since the Hamas-led
attack last year.
The Human Rights Watch report cites Israel as saying these restrictions are necessary
to choke off Hamas' military apparatus.
But in the ensuing humanitarian crisis, the vast majority of Gazans are experiencing high
levels of acute food insecurity, according to the IPC, a classification system by world
experts on hunger.
Human Rights Watch says children have died from malnutrition and dehydration.
Israel denies its using starvation as a weapon and says it's recently increased the number
of aid trucks that can cross into Gaza.
But aid groups working in Gaza say what's being allowed through is not nearly enough.

Tonight, former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson holds his first sanctioned fight since 2005.
The 58-year-old will face 27-year-old YouTube return boxer
Jake Paul in Texas.
At the weigh-in, things got a little physical.
Ladies and gentlemen!
Yeah, that's when Tyson slapped Paul,
who basically seemed to revel in it
as Tyson and his entourage walked away.
Netflix will livestream the fight
at 8 p.m. Eastern, 5 Pacific.
Comedian, writer, and former late night TV host Conan O'Brien will host the 97th
Academy Award ceremony in March and Piers Mandelita del Barco has details.
Conan O'Brien announced the news on social media gushing into the camera and
holding the golden statuette. I've been handed an Oscar. I don't know if you're a host. Oh, I'm hosting.
Yes.
I'm an Oscar host.
Exactly.
Oh, but do I still get to keep the Oscar?
With his self-deprecating humor, O'Brien has entertained audiences for years as a writer
for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons, and also hosting the talk shows Late Night
with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, and Conan.
He's brought along viewers as he traveled the world and he hosts a podcast. Now for
the first time, he'll be emceeing and introducing Hollywood stars at the Academy Awards. Mandelit
