President Biden is meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping today on the sidelines of a global
summit in Peru.
NPR's Azma Khalid reports it's likely the last time these world leaders will meet before
the next administration takes over in January.
Azma Khalid Biden has spent much of his presidency trying
to manage competition and work with allies to counter China's influence. But China's influence around the world has
been growing. In fact, China's President Xi arrived in Peru this week and inaugurated
a huge new Chinese funded port in the country in effort to extend its economic ties in Latin
America. Biden is expected to discuss trade practices today, in addition to issues around fentanyl,
AI, and climate.
But one big question looming over the Biden-Xi talks is how the incoming president, Donald
Trump, will navigate the relationship.
During his campaign, Trump threatened hefty additional tariffs on China.

China has issued a diplomatic offensive warning the world against descending into an economic
protectionism.
The BBC's Mickey Bristow reports this appears to be a response to the election of Trump
for a second term.
Speaking at the APEC summit in Peru, the Chinese leader Xi Jinping said the world faced turbulence
and transformation.
He warned against unilateralism and protectionism.
Mr. Trump has promised to levy tariffs of at least 60% on Chinese imports, a serious
threat to China's economy.
The BBC's Mickey Bristow reporting, several of President-elect Trump's picks for top national
security posts are facing criticism
for their lack of experience and controversial positions they've expressed.
NPR's Greg Myrie reports Trump has taken a different approach to his nominees in his
second term compared to his first.
In his first term, Trump selected a national security team largely made up of experienced
hands often described as the adults in the room.
Yet all were dismissed at some point in Trump's first term.
This time his nominees are best known for their enthusiastic support of Trump.
They include former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence and TV
host Pete Hegseth to run the Pentagon.
Global affairs analyst Ian Brimmer describes the picks this way.
Lighter experience generally would be perceived as less capable on the national security,
defense and foreign policy space, but clearly more alignment, more loyalty personally to
Trump. The nominees must still be confirmed by the
Senate. Greg Myrie, NPR News, Washington.
Authorities are investigating an incident at the Dallas Lovefield Airport last night.
Southwest Airlines says a bullet struck one of its planes as it was preparing to take
off.
No one was injured.

Representatives from countries around the world are in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the United
Nations Climate Summit.
Hundreds of activists are also there today.
They're gathering in other cities as well for what they call a global day of action.
The protesters are demanding more money be spent to transition to cleaner energy and
to help lower-income countries adapt to climate change.
The National Women's Soccer League playoffs continue this weekend with a pair of semi-final
matches.
MPR's Becky Sullivan has this preview of the final contest for the best-performing teams
this season.
The four teams left were the best-performing teams this season in the NWSL.
On Saturday, the Washington Spirit, led by U.S. Olympic star Trinity Rodman, will host
Gotham FC, the defending champions. Then, Sunday, the league's number one overall team, the Orlando
Pride, will take on the Kansas City Current. That match will star some of the world's most exciting
players, including the Brazilian icon Marta, who plays with Orlando, and Kansas City's Malawian
phenom, Timwa Choinga, who led the NWSL in scoring this year.
The winners will advance to a championship game
later this month in Kansas City.
It's been a historic year for the league.
Total attendance topped two million fans for the first time.

took on the former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson
in a much hyped fight
at the home of the NFL Dallas Cowboys last night.
Paul won in an unanimous decision before some 72,000 fans.
