Starting point is 00:00:23 With President Biden on the way out and Donald Trump gearing up a return to the White House, Chinese leader Xi Jinping is warning the U.S. not to test China's red lines. Xi and Biden met this weekend on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Leaders Summit in Peru. With Trump looming over the meeting, Xi told Biden that Beijing is willing to continue to work with the U.S. and expand cooperation into the future. Instead, he said the two countries should find ways to deepen cooperation. That goes for other areas too, like public health and law enforcement. Relations between Beijing and Washington are at an inflection point, though. The super typhoon that's been sweeping across the Philippines has made landfall on the main
Starting point is 00:01:32 island of Luzon. The BBC's Simon Ponsford reports that there have been evacuation orders for more than a million people. This is the sixth major storm to smash into the Philippines in the past month and there are warnings it could be life-threatening. The super typhoon is battering the country's most populous island, Luzon, although the capital Manila, where about 15 million people live, is not forecast to be in its path. The government is worried that along with fierce winds, the storm will bring torrential
Starting point is 00:02:01 rain and could cause flash floods and landslides. Forecasts say tropical storm Sarah could also bring flooding and landslides to portions of Central America. Sarah is expected to make landfall along the coast of Belize around midday. More has come to light about Secretariat Defense nominee Peter Hegseth's religious affiliation. She says he belongs to a Christian Reformation church that seeks to impose Old Testament biblical law across society. Israeli police say three suspects are in custody after flares were fired at the private residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A motive is not clear, but Netanyahu has faced months of protests over his handling of the hostage crisis sparked by Hamas' October 7th attack.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Separately, Palestinian medical officials say Israeli strikes in central Gaza this weekend killed at least a dozen people. Venezuela has begun freeing people who were arrested during the protests that followed July's disputed presidential election. A local rights group has confirmed the release of more than 100 detainees. The group says more than 1,800 were arrested following the election that kept Nicolas Maduro in power despite disputed results. Nearly three-quarters of all adults in the U.S. now overweight or
Starting point is 00:04:05 obese. That's the conclusion of a broad-new study that finds obesity rates among adults and children have skyrocketed since 1990, in Piers Maria Godoy reports. The study found that rates of obesity among adults and adolescents ages 15 and up have at least doubled in the past three decades, and more than one in three children now have overweight or obesity. The researchers say that's alarming because obesity can trigger serious health conditions that are now occurring at younger ages, including type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, and cancer. They note that already the prevalence of childhood hypertension and
Starting point is 00:04:39 diabetes is rising. The researchers warn that, without action to reverse these trends, more than 43 million kids and adolescents ages 5 and up will be overweight or obese by 2050. The findings appear in the journal The Lancet. Maria Godoy, NPR News.
