Chinese leader Xi Jinping and President Biden met
Saturday on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific Leaders Summit in Lima, Peru. Xi told Biden
that Beijing is willing to continue to work with the United States and expand cooperation
into the future. But with Biden on the way out and Donald Trump gearing to return to
the White House, Xi warned America not to test China's red lines. And Piers John-Rewitsch
explains. Xi warned America not to test China's red lines and peers John Rewich explains It's likely to be their last official meeting but she came with a clear message
Taiwan democracy human rights and the right to development are red lines for China and they are not to be challenged by the US on
Trade she said barriers decoupling and the destruction of supply chains was not the way forward
Instead he said the two countries should find ways to deepen cooperation.
That goes for other areas too, like public health and law enforcement. Relations between Beijing and
Washington are at an inflection point though. Trump promised high tariffs on all U.S. imports
made in China and he's nominated several people for key cabinet posts who are seen as hawkish on
China. John Ruech, NPR News, Shanghai. President-elect Donald Trump said this week that he'll nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
As a presidential candidate, Kennedy had campaigned for a focus on what he called Make America
Healthy Again.
NPR's Will Stone tells us what that could mean under a Trump administration.
Kennedy and Trump have said that their central mandate is to reverse the chronic disease epidemic in the US and
we're talking about diabetes, heart disease, these are the leading causes of
death, they're tied to diet, physical activity and other lifestyle factors and
to achieve this ambitious goal supporters of this maha movement have
set their sights on big food and big pharma.
You know, these are industries that they say use their influence over government to push policies that undermine the country's health.
That's NPR's Will Stone reporting.
Hurricanes can have long-lasting eroding effects on coastlines.
Gabriel Dawkins of Houston Public Media has the latest from a geologist who has been monitoring locations along the
Texas coast for several years.
80% of the coast is eroding, 80%.
And the average rate for that is 1.27 meter per year.
Shuhab Khan, professor of earth and atmospheric sciences at the University of Houston, shared
year over year statistics.
He says keeping a keen eye on the coast is a must, especially after hurricanes like
Barrow earlier this year.
Follett Island and from there on all the way to Sargent, there were a lot of damages.
And then you go towards Metagoday, Decrees and finally Mustang and North Pothrey, we
had minimal changes, if any.
Khan says data being collected will help to quantify coastal erosion, track recovery process
and improve predictive models for storm damage.

And you're listening to NPR News.
Ukraine's president says Russia has launched 120 missiles and 90 drones in what appears
to be a large-scale attack across Ukraine.
And he says the attack is targeting the country's energy infrastructure.
Volodymyr Zelensky says 140 of the air targets were shot down by Ukrainian forces.
Officials say that in one city, two people were killed and six others injured from a
drone strike.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says a new strain of EMPOX has been confirmed
in California's San Mateo County.
MPR's Gabriella Emanuel reports.
This strain, known as clade 1, is more deadly than the EMPOX strain already circulating
in the U.S.
Its fatality rate ranges from 1 percent to 10 percent.
The California patient had recently traveled to Africa,
where there is a large outbreak of EMPOX.
After returning to the state,
he visited a local health clinic where he was diagnosed.
Chris D. Hudson is with the CDC.
Symptoms thus far have remained mild,
and they are now isolating at home.
So hopefully they will fully recover.
Hudson says the risk to the general public is low. Other
clade one Mpox cases in Sweden, Thailand, India and elsewhere have not led to additional cases.
Gabriella Emanuel and PR News. Tropical storm Sarah is now heading to Belize after dumping rain
in Honduras this weekend. Local officials say flooding has trapped some people in their homes
and even isolated one village when its's only river crossing was washed away
The National Hurricane Center in Miami says the entire region could see life-threatening flash floods as well as mudslides
