President Trump met with New York City mayor-elect Zeran Monbony in a much-anticipated meeting between the President of the United States and the incoming mayor of the country's biggest city. For Trump, he's been struggling in the polls, especially on the economy, and he's been trying to get in on Mondani's affordability message, which he ran so successfully. Now, Trump won last year on a similar economic message, but he's now been struggling, especially with inflation. So you could make the argument that Trump's kind of trying to ride Mondani's coattails here on this issue. NPR's Franco Ordonez. U.S. Border Patrol agents appear to be winding down their operation in Charlotte, North Carolina, after arresting some 370 people over five days. Nick De La Canal of member station WFAE reports. Activists say border patrol sightings around Charlotte have dropped sharply, though they're urging undocumented and mixed out as families to stay alert. In Washington, North Carolina Republican Senator Tom Tillis said he wants the identities of detainees to be released.
Starting point is 00:01:27 I want to make sure that Homeland Security can provide me with the definitive list of people who were detained, how long they were detained, whether or not they were released, and when property was damaged, whether or not they've been provided proper restitution. Homeland Security has identified only a handful of detainees, saying at least 44 have criminal records and two are suspected gang members. For NPR News, I'm Nick Della Canal in Charlotte. In Nigeria, gunmen have attacked a boarding school and abducted students from their dorm. The attack comes days after the abduction of 25. female students from another boarding school in a neighboring state. His NPR's Jewel Bright reports. Nigerian authorities said the attack occurred in the early hours of Friday
Starting point is 00:02:06 at the St. Mary's Catholic School in Papiri, a massive search and rescue operation is now underway. Local authorities have accused the school of ignoring an order from the government to close all boarding facilities in the area amid intelligence warnings of a heightened risk of abductions. Nigeria has faced a wave of attacks by armed groups in recent. weeks. The Trump administration has accused Nigerian government of failing to protect civilians and of condoning a genocide against Christians. The Nigerian government denies this and says

Russian President Vladimir Putin says a U.S. proposal to end Moscow's nearly four-year war in Ukraine could form the basis for a final peace settlement. The plan includes many of Putin's demands like Ukraine, giving up territory, shrinking its army, and giving up its aspirations to join the NATO alliance. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky hasn't accepted the deal, but says he'll work calmly with Washington and other partners in what he called, quote, truly one of the most difficult moments in our history. Starting point is 00:03:24 the MD-11. The planes have been exclusively hauling cargo for more than a decade. The fate of these planes won't be determined until after UPS, FedEx, and Western Global, see how expensive the repairs for the FAA orders will be. The planes average more than 30 years old. Foxconn and NVIDIA are investing in an AI supercomputing cluster that's scheduled to come online in Taiwan by next year, NPR's Emily Fang reports. The $1.4 billion data center will be Taiwan's most powerful configuration of what are called GPUs, a type of semiconductor designed for applications like artificial intelligence. The chips come from NVIDIA, founded by Taiwanese-American Jensen Huang. NVIDIA is now valued at around $5 trillion, making it the world's most valuable company.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Taiwan is also where many of NVIDIA's chips are made, but NVIDIA's biggest market is the U.S. and China, which says it wants to take over Taiwan one day. That has put Taiwan in in an awkward spot. It's been investing in its own computing centers like the Foxcon won to boost its own computing capabilities. Meanwhile, Foxcon is also partnering with OpenAI to build parts for new data centers in the U.S., according to an announcement yesterday. Emily Fang and Peer News. Comedian and actor Eddie Murphy is being celebrated with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. Murphy is 64 years old. He's been a force in entertainment for nearly 50 years.
