Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Rahm. Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green says she plans to leave Congress on January 5th. Her decision comes after months of political infighting and her recent break with President Trump. NPR Stephen Fowler reports Green's departure could shift the balance inside the Republican Party heading into 2026. Marjorie Taylor Green rose to prominence as one of Trump's biggest defenders, and more recently, become one of his biggest critics. In an 11-minute social media video, the blast Republicans, House leadership, and attacks by the president, she says she's had enough. And I do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president that we all
Starting point is 00:00:47 fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms. Green is now one of a record 40 House members and 10 senators, mostly Republicans, who've indicated they do not plan to return to their seats after the 2026 elections. Stephen Fowler, NPR News, Atlanta. Open enrollment is happening now on health care.gov. 22 millions of people are facing down huge premium spikes. If enhanced, Affordable Care Act subsidies, go away. NPR's Selena Simmons-Duffin reports.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Republicans and Democrats appear divided over whether to continue the enhanced premium tax credits beyond December. Those have kept Affordable Care Act planned premiums down for several years. In a recent Senate Finance Committee hearing, Republican Chair Mike Crapo of Idaho explained why he opposes extending the enhanced subsidies. We cannot simply throw good money after bad policy. He says the enhanced subsidies paper over rising health costs and enable fraud. Democratic Senator Rafael Warnock of Georgia responded that the health care system is like a patient in the ICU. We need to stabilize the system before we can explore
Starting point is 00:01:59 innovative treatment options for long-term care. The deadline for enrollees to pick a plan that begins next year is December 15th. Selina Simmons-Duffin and PR News, Washington. Ukraine has announced its beginning consultations with the U.S. and its international partners, as well as representatives from Russia, on ways to end the war. President Zelensky's office said Ukraine was ready to work as quickly as possible to achieve real peace. The BBC's Joe Inwood reports. The 28-point plan, as it stands, is seen by many as demanding the complete capitulation of Ukraine.
Starting point is 00:02:34 President Zelensky has strongly suggested he cannot accept it, but that there is room to negotiate. That process will take place in Switzerland, according to one of his chief aides, over the coming days, where high-level Ukrainian and U.S. delegations will meet. Plans to see Ukraine give up swathes of territory and limit the size of its armed forces will no doubt be discussed. This is NPR News. in Washington. Officials in Nigeria today revised upward the number of those abducted from a Catholic school
Starting point is 00:03:05 yesterday. They say 303 children and 12 teachers were taken during the raid by gunmen. This is the second such attack this week. 25 children were seized in similar circumstances from a school in a neighboring state. No group has claimed responsibility for either attack. This weekend, artists across the country are participating in a school. and what they say is creative resistance to authoritarianism. NPR's Anastasiasi Ucassas has remorse.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Fall of Freedom includes more than 600 events across the U.S., ranging from performances of Les Miserables in Portland, Maine, to a zine-making workshop in Homer, Alaska. Fall of Freedom is the brainchild of visual artist Dred Scott. He told NPR that right now, many artists in cultural institutions are feeling paralyzed by political pressures. He wanted to provide an old. open-ended framework for them to use their creativity to feel less isolated.
