Starting point is 00:00:33 10 percent on Chinese goods to stop undocumented migrants and illegal drugs from entering the U.S. Trump says he'll do it his first day in office. He's also promised to cut government spending using a tool called impoundment. NPR's Franco Ardonez explains. Congress has the power of the purse. It decides how money should be spent. Impoundment is when the president kind of holds back money that Congress has approved for a specific purpose. Trump and his allies argue a president has the right or should have the right to not spend those funds. And that's raising alarm bells across Washington that Trump may be trying to
Starting point is 00:01:09 overstep his power. And Pires Franco Ordonia is reporting. The Israeli military says it's conducting a large set of airstrikes against terrorist targets in Lebanon's capital Beirut. This comes as there's word a ceasefire deal between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah may be close, but the deal does not involve Gaza, where Israel is battling Hamas militants. Another winter has arrived in Gaza. NPR producer Anas Baba met with Palestinian families on the edge of survival, and NPR's Eya Batraoui prepared this report.
Starting point is 00:01:41 The flimsy tents here, made out of some wood and used food aid bags, are no match for the Mediterranean Sea's lashing winds and tide. While some families in Gaza survived the grueling summer on the water's edge like this, the oncoming winter is simply unbearable. Nidal Abdel Qatati says his children erupted into screams at night, their bed sheets and even they were being swept out to sea by waves. Where are our human rights, he says. Aid groups say over a million people urgently need kits for adequate tents and shelter for
Starting point is 00:02:16 the winter. But UN agencies note people are starving with not even enough food crossing into Gaza from Israel. Ayah Batraoui, MPR News, Dubai. In Pakistan, tens of thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan have marched into the capital to demand his release from jail. Omkar Khandeqa reports the army is responding to the unrest. Protesters across Pakistan marched into Islamabad in response to a call by the former Prime
Starting point is 00:02:42 Minister Imran Khan. Police fired tear gas and blocked roads with shipping containers. Protesters responded by pelting stones and climbing over the barricades. A spokesman for Khan's party said police killed one person and arrested thousands of their members. The Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif called the protesters extremists and deployed the army in the capital. Journalists also report they have been surrounded and attacked by Khan supporters and some had

The Biden administration is proposing that Medicare and Medicaid cover expensive weight-loss medications for beneficiaries. These include drugs like Ozempic and Wigovie. The White House says the medications could help millions of Americans with obesity. Some beneficiaries can obtain some of these medications for conditions such as diabetes,
Starting point is 00:03:43 but not for weight loss as a condition on its own. There are some record-setting milestones in this week's Billboard music charts, and PR Stephen Thompson has more. Shaboosie's A Bar Song Tipsy has pulled into a tie for the longest run at number one of any song in the history of Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart, which dates back to 1958. The song has now sat atop the chart for 19 non-consecutive weeks, dating back to July. The other song that's held the top spot for 19 weeks, Old Town Road by Lil Nas X, which topped the chart for 19 consecutive weeks back in 2019.
Starting point is 00:04:22 There's also a major milestone on the Billboard albums chart. For the first time ever, three K-pop acts hold down spots in the top 10. The boy bands Ateez and Enhypen, as well as Jin of BTS. Stephen Thompson, NPR News. A Deep Sea exploration company says that it did not find the underwater plane wreckage of famed pilot Amelia Earhart. Deep Sea Vision says its sonar pictures of what it thought was her plane was actually of a natural rock formation that looks like a plane. Earhart and her navigator disappeared in 1937 in the Pacific Ocean. They were trying to fly around the world.
