President Trump has been attacking Somali immigrants recently, saying he doesn't want them in this country and that their country stinks.
Starting point is 00:00:31 The administration announced plans to end temporary protected status for Somali nationals. About 80,000 people of Somali descent live in Minnesota. As Minnesota Public Radio's Matt Seppik reports, the administration is targeting the state's community with extra immigration enforcement. Jay Lonnie Hussein, who leads the Minnesota chapter of Council on American Islamic Relations and was born in Somalia, came here as a child, said to date that the community has reported already seeing an increase. increased presence of immigration and customs enforcement personnel in the Twin Cities.
Starting point is 00:01:03 He also said he's received reports of American citizens being asked about their citizenship. Hussein says this is blatantly discriminatory. President Trump says he's pardoning Democratic Texas Congressman Henry Henry Quayar and his wife, they were both charged last year with bribery, unlawful foreign influence, and money laundering by the Department of Justice, Texas Public Radio's Joey Palacios reports.
Starting point is 00:01:39 In a post on true social, Trump said Quayar and his wife Imelda would receive a full and unconditional pardon, adding, quote, you can both sleep well tonight, your nightmare is finally over. The Justice Department had indicted the Quayars in May 24, alleging that Henry Quayor had accepted approximately $600,000 in bribes from a Mexican bank, and an oil and gas company owned by the government of Azerbaijan, laundering the money through shell companies owned by Amelda Quayar. Both pleaded not guilty. Although a Democrat quayor has often sided with Republicans in many House votes, on Facebook, the congressman thanked Trump for the pardon, saying it gives him a clean slate. Starting point is 00:02:21 Israel says it will soon open Gaza's border with Egypt, allowing Palestinians to leave for the first time in a year and a half, but Egypt says it won't open the border until Palestinians can return to NPR's Jerome Sokolovsky explains. Rafa crossing has been closed since Israel took control of the border area in May 2024. Israel's government says the reopening is in line with the October ceasefire deal with Hamas. An official briefed on the matter, but not authorized to speak publicly, told NPR, it was the result of a phone call on Tuesday between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump who wants to see progress on the deal. Israel says the crossing will be opened only to one-way traffic out of Gaza.
Starting point is 00:03:02 But Egypt controls the other side of the border, and its government says in a statement that the crossing will only open if passage is allowed in both directions. San Francisco is suing major food manufacturers like Coca-Cola and Nestle, claiming ultra-processed foods, are causing a public health crisis.
Starting point is 00:03:27 The lawsuit argues such foods are linked to diseases like type 2 diabetes and cancer. Gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth are particularly vulnerable to suicidal thoughts and attempts around the time they come out to their family and friends. It's according to a new study in the journal, Pediatrics. NPR's Ritu Chatterjee reports. Researchers looked at data from a study on gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth conducted between 2016 and 2019, called the Generation Study. 55% of individuals reported having had a suicide plan.
Starting point is 00:03:59 38% had suicidal intention and nearly a quarter had made suicide attempts. The risk of suicidal thoughts or plans rose by 8 to 12% around the time youth came out to family members or friends. Supportive family and friends lower suicide risk, says study author Harry Barbie at Johns Hopkins University. Support, I think, doesn't need to be perfect. I think even small gestures of love and curiosity can make a really big difference. People in suicidal crisis can call or text the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
