Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Wednesday, April 10.
Here's the midday news for Michael Hill.
Mayor Adams says the city will end its contract with the medical service company Doc Go after
screwing over the costly deal and the quality of the firm's services to migrants.
Political first reported this news.
The city awarded Dock Go, a more than $400 million contract, that is, a no-bit emergency contract last year to help the city manage the influx of migrants, but reports later alleged mistreatment of migrants under the company's care.
Officials say they'll temporarily use an existing contract with the company garner environmental services while they look for a new provider.
A new report from the New York State Education Department is suggesting reforms to the mayor's control of the city.
public school system, WNIC's Jessica Gould explains.
The report notes that the city's top-down approach to education gives the mayor more power
than any other school district in the country.
And while it doesn't recommend abolishing mayoral control, it does call for reform
that would further empower students, parents, and educators.
Ultimately, the nearly 300-page report calls for more study through the creation of a commission
to consider changes.
But Mayor Eric Adams slammed the report.
before he had a chance to read it, saying it was biased and failed to acknowledge the progress
city schools have made in the two decades mayors have been in charge. The state legislature must
decide whether to extend mayoral control and for how long by the end of June.
The Jersey largest city is stepping up enforcement of its curfews starting Friday.
Newark says unaccompanied teens, younger than 18, should not be more than 100 feet from
their homes after 11 at night. There are a few exceptions such as for teens heading to and
jobs. A minor found unaccompanied late at night would be escorted home for first offense.
If police find a minor out twice within six months, they'll go to the Newark Police
Division's juvenile offender office for a parent or guardian to pick them up.
A Brooklyn tattoo parlor is devoting itself to tattoos of Flocko the Owl tomorrow.
The shop is called East River Tattoo in Greenpoint.
Tattoes would cost $150. The flash day sale would run from noon until 8,000.
tomorrow. You can sign up on a sheet that'll be in front of the store an hour before it opens.
An earlier version of the story misstated when the flash is ready. Taking a look now at your
forecast. Alternate-side parking, first of all, suspended for the day, but we still must pay the
parking meters. We have 58 right now with some clouds out there. Mostly cloudy today and we'll reach
all the way up to 61 for high. And then tonight is slim chance of overnight showers,
cloudy and just down to 54 so we don't cool off all that much. And then tomorrow afternoon
showers likely, cloudy and 64. Stormy at night, Friday a chance of shower 66 before a sunny,
dry and nice weekend. Thanks for listening. This is NYC now from WNYC. Be sure to catch us every
