Welcome to NYC now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Wednesday, April 19th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Mid-40s with clouds, sunshine today, and mid-60s.
An investigation is underway after part of a parking garage collapsed yesterday in Lower Manhattan.
It killed one person.
WNYC's Catalina Gonella went to the scene.
Video of the collapse shows the roof of the three-story garage at 57-inch street buckling,
with several cars caving into it.
Riley Christopher is a student at Columbia University who's been staying at the hotel next to the garage.
I heard this loud explosion-like noise, and then the whole building shook for a few seconds,
and so I got up and looked out of the window and saw this huge dust cloud
and saw that the parking garage below me had collapsed in.
Right about that time, they came over the intercom system and announced that we all needed to evacuate the building.
The FDNY said several workers were trapped under the rubble.
One person died and four others were taken to the hospital.
Another refused medical care.
The MTA's brand new Grand Central Madison train terminal has hit a new milestone.
Officials say more than one million riders have traveled through the new station since it opened in late January.
MTA chairman, Janelle Lieber says while there was scheduling issues when the terminal opened,
he believes the agency has fixed those problems and the million rider milestone,
is proof. They may not be stopping to send us heart emojis on their commutes, but they're voting
with their tickets and with their feet to come to this part of town and to take advantage of the
fact that there's a brand new world-class railroad terminal. The new terminal costs more than
$11 billion to build and now gives Long Island Railroad riders access to Manhattan's east side.
The new terminal still doesn't have any retail stores, but Lieber says the MTA is considering opening a
restaurant and bar there.
We're getting a look at Little Island's plans for their summer season of free concerts,
dance performances, and comedy events.
The Manmade Park and Performance Venue are on the Hudson River at Pier 55.
Among the musical guests just announced are Grammy-winning artist Joshua Henry and Jay
Horde, Saturday Night Live cast member James Austin Johnson, and singer-songwriter and theater
artist Cheney Taub.
The summer series at Little Island.
runs June 2nd to September 3rd, no tickets or reservations needed.
