Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Tuesday, April 9th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Republican Jack Chittarelli plans to announce his third run for Governor of New Jersey today.
WNYC's Nancy Solomon reports another Republican figure looms quite large in this race.
The Republican primary for governor won't be held until June 2020.
And so far, there's just one litmus test for GOP candidates, whether they support Donald Trump.
Jack Chittarelli says he does.
And the other Republican in the race, State Senator John Bramnick, does not.
Seton Hall political scientist Matt Hale says this is the key issue that will define Chittarelli.
So one of the things that all Republicans in New Jersey struggle with is how do you deal with Donald Trump?
And I think what he's decided is the goal is for Republicans to win,
and that if Donald Trump is the nominee, you support the nominee to win.
Jitterrelli came within 3.2 points of beating Phil Murphy in the last general election for governor.
A top NYPD official says a chaotic situation led to the deadly shooting of a 19-year-old Queens resident
who called 911 during a mental health crisis last month.
NYPD chief of patrol John Shell told WNIC's the Brian Lear show yesterday.
The department is still reviewing what happened when,
police shot 19-year-old Wyn Rosario at his home in Ozone Park.
Shell says police don't routinely bring mental health workers with them
when they respond to people in distress.
I don't think we have a mechanism where mental health professionals show up to every 911 call.
So we're the first people that get their call.
They're the first cops that get there.
Police said Rosario was holding a pair of scissors when he came at officers
after being tasered during the confrontation and the officers shot in.
Rosario's family disputes the NYPD's version of events and says he did not need to be killed.
