Starting point is 00:00:02 Welcome to NYC now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Tuesday, August 1st. Here's the morning headlines from David First. Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochel are taking up the New York City's latest effort to tackle gun violence. The two Democrats made a rare joint appearance at City Hall yesterday. The so-called blueprint for community safety puts nearly 500,000, million dollars into social programs. But Mayor Adams bristled at a reporter's question about his administration's accountability. Hold us accountable. We're all in this together. It's not, you know, it's not just me.
Starting point is 00:00:46 It's not the folks here. It is the men and one of the media highlighting some of the good things we're doing. NYPD data show that murders and shootings are down year to date since last year. New York City continues to struggle to house and care for tens of thousands of new arrivals, many of who who are staying in homeless shelters. Just over the weekend, the city's intake center at the Roosevelt Hotel reached capacity, exacerbating concerns over where to house the newcomers. Marad Awada is the executive director at the New York Immigration Coalition. He says caring for asylum seekers in an already deteriorating shelter system is not the solution.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Getting them out of shelter and into permanent housing. That is the real solution that we need to be investing and focusing on in this moment. Mayor Adams recently set a 60-day limit for single adult migrants living in city shelters. He says that will help make room for migrant families with children. City officials estimate more than 90,000 people seeking asylum have arrived in New York City since last spring. New Jersey State Senate President Nicholas Gattari is currently the acting governor of the state. WNYC's Nancy Solomon reports he was elevated to the position. Actor-acting Governor Sheila Oliver fell in.
Starting point is 00:02:03 yesterday. The governor's office put out a turf statement saying the lieutenant governor is receiving medical care at Cooperman-Barnibus Medical Center in Livingston and is unable to handle the duties of acting governor. As lieutenant governor, Oliver routinely takes over when the governor is out of state. Phil Murphy's on vacation in Italy and not expected to return until August 13th, the governor's office declined to provide more details about Oliver's health status and hasn't announced any plans for Murphy to come home early. Oliver is 72, was born and raised in Newark, and was first elected to the State Assembly in 2003. 68 degrees right now in New York City, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation
