Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Monday, August 14th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. The number of migrants arriving in New York City is growing despite a decrease in the number of people crossing at the country's southern border. WNYC's Tiffany Hanson has more. Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iskell says nearly 3,000. people entered the city's care last week, bringing the total number to nearly 60,000. Speaking on his
Starting point is 00:00:39 WBLS radio show, Mayor Eric Adams, said, quote, the dam has burst and reiterated his calls for the state and federal government to help. He asked the White House to expedite work authorization permits for migrants and argued that barring new arrivals from legal work was, quote, anti-American. On Saturday, Governor Hokel released a quarter of the $1 billion, the state has set a side. side to help the city. Officials say that's not enough to foot the projected $12 billion bill the city will run by June of 2025. The Hokel administration says it's in talks with the U.S. Department of the Interior for taking over some federal property to house the migrants. The NYPD says its hate crimes task force is investigating vandalism at a synagogue on Manhattan's

Services were just about to start over the week at a congregation Kila, Esrin, when those arriving saw the graffiti, Rabbi Roy Feldman says they quickly called the police and provided security video of the perpetrator. Feldman says the synagogue will increase its private security. We are a strong and resilient community. Our people has been strong and resilient for thousands of years, and we will continue doing what we do. The Anti-Defamation League says anti-Semitic, vandalism, and violence are on the rise nationally.
Starting point is 00:02:03 Buffalo Bill's safety, tomorrow Hamlin says he felt in his element after making his first tackle over the weekend during the team's preseason opening win over the Indianapolis Colts. The game marked Hamlin's first time back on the field in a competitive setting since going into cardiac arrest and having to be resuscitated on the field during a game in Cincinnati in January. Hamlin was hospitalized for more than a week. He's been, he's since rejoined teammates and appeared at the Super Bowl and even met with President Biden. 74 and partly cloudy, partly sunny in 86 today.
