Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Tuesday, August 15th.
Here's the morning headlines for Michael Hill.
City and state officials continue to call on the federal government
to open up access to Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field.
They hope to use it to shelter newly arrived asylum seekers.
Vice President of NYC Health and Hospitals, Ted Long, says,
The city desperately needs the space on top of two other shelters opening in the coming days.
It's not or it's and, right? We need more and more spaces.
Based on the numbers that we're coming in, we need the spaces that we have, and we need Floyd Bennettfield.
Governor Kathy Hogle has says the federal government has yet to grant the request.
The governor has been asking the Biden administration about housing new arrivals at Floyd Bennettfield since May.
The longest serving lawmaker in New Jersey history is calling it a career.
State Senator and former Governor Richard Cody says he's retiring after 50 years of service.
Professor Benjamin Dworkin directs Rowan University's Institute for Public Policy and Citizenship.
He says Cody's longevity wasn't easy in the rough world of New Jersey politics.
The people who have also had very long careers generally got in and they were the part
party favorite and they had a safe seat and that was it. What you had with Dick Cody was that he would
have battles throughout his life and he always emerged victorious. Cody was first elected to the
State Assembly in 1973. He eventually served as Senate president for eight years. Cody also served as
governor for 14 months after the resignation of Jim McGreevy in 2004. A heads up for M-Train riders.
The MTA says the M-line will be shut down for track work at the end of the month all the way through Labor Day weekend.
The work starts late on Wednesday, August 30th, and will continue until morning rush hour on Tuesday, September 5th.
That's the morning after Labor Day.
Shuttle buses will serve customers between Middle Village, Queens, and Myrtle Avenue and Bushwick, Brooklyn,
where we can transfer to a J or Z train there.
You can check out the MTA's website for more alternate routes.
That's MTA.
