Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Thursday, August 22nd. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. A major Bronx landlord is paying the city a record high penalty to resolve accusations of housing discrimination. WNYC's David Brand reports on the settlement with the city's Commission on Human Rights. Investigators found Parkchester. preservation management was blocking low-income tenants with housing vouchers from renting
Starting point is 00:00:35 apartments in their sprawling complex. The Parkchester development features more than 6,000 rental units. But the owner's policies prevented people with Section 8 and other housing subsidies for moving in. That's an illegal practice known as source of income discrimination. Mayor Adams says Parkchester agreed to pay a $1 million fine and set aside hundreds of units for tenants who use housing vouchers to pay the rent. Parkchester did not respond to. request for comment. The family of a Jersey City man, shot and killed by police last summer, is suing local officials. WNBC Samantha Max reports. Loved ones say he needed psychiatric care, not a police response. Andrew Washington died after officers lined up outside his apartment,
Starting point is 00:01:20 busted open his door, shocked him with a taser, and shot him. That's according to body camera footage. Washington's sister Courtney says police escalated the situation instead of help Washington, who would live for 25 years with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. You don't want to see it happen to another family. It's so wrong. Everything went so wrong. Courtney says her family called for help because they thought Washington was off his medication and needed treatment. Local officials and the police union did not immediately respond to our request for comment. The Afro-punk festival is back this weekend at a new home at the Prospect Park Banshell.

Now it's partnering with Celebrate Brooklyn, which has its own long-running summer music series in Prospect Park. Erica Badu will headline both days of the festival.
