Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Friday, August 25th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. The NYPD says a man died after detective threw a cooler at him as he was fleeing a drug bust on a scooter. WNYC's Catalina Gona went to the scene yesterday where loved ones gathered tomorrow. Friends and family of Eric Dupre are shrewd, struggling to make sense of what happened during his last moments. His wife, Orliani's Velas,
Starting point is 00:00:38 says she feels the NYPD has kept her in the dark with little information about her husband's death. They haven't called me. They haven't given me no explanation. I keep waiting for these people. They say they was going to call me to give me the update, but nobody haven't called me yet. The NYPD says it will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident. Roosevelt Island tram riders can now use Omni instead of their Metro car to ride. MCA Chair General Lieber says those living on Roosevelt Island deserve flexibility as well. The Roosevelt Islanders deserve the same convenience of Tap and Go, and we're delighted to be able to deliver. Lieber says the transition away from MetroCard is well underway with the air train up next.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Right now, riders cannot use unlimited passes or Omni on the air train. All Omni taps count towards an automatic free weekly card when you hit 12 rides. August is rolling to a close, and so is New York City's Summer Street Initiative for this year. The city holds its final summer streets for 2023. That's tomorrow in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn will close to cars between Grand Army Plaza and Buffalo Avenue, and in the Bronx, the Grand Concourse will get the same treatment between East Tremont and East Mochaloo Parkway. The streets will close off for pedestrians, bikers, skaters, and everyone in between from 7 in the morning until 1 in the afternoon.
Starting point is 00:02:11 This weekend's festivities mark the end of summer streets 15th season. And you may want to take an umbrella out there tomorrow when you go. 73 with thunderstorms right now. Shows and thunderstorms today, heavy rain for the morning commute, maybe. and the threat of flash flooding will reach a high near 79 today. And then tonight and overnight a 50-50 chance of morning showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain, 72 for a low. And then tomorrow for that Summer Street Festival in Brooklyn and the Bronx,
Starting point is 00:02:42 a slight chance of morning showers and afternoon thunderstorm is partly sunny, a warm one too, up to 85 on Saturday. And then we cool off to 67 overnight. Sunday?
