Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Monday, August 26th. Here's the morning headlines from Kerry Nolan. Police are investigating five deaths at a home on suburban Long Island. Nassau County police say officers responded to a report of shots fired in Siasat at midday yesterday and found the body of a man outside a home with an apparent self-inflicted. did gunshot wound. The bodies of four more people were found inside the home, about 15 miles
Starting point is 00:00:36 east of New York City. Police say all five people were pronounced dead by a police medic. The investigation is ongoing. A property developer plans to buy a 124-year-old church on East 119th Street in East Harlem and could replace it with a residential building. Cardinal Timothy Dolan said the church has fallen into disrepair and would be too expensive to fix. Erica Fernandez his family has lived next to the church for 20 years. She says its demolition would be a loss for the neighborhood. Because it was almost like a landmark around here, so it seems like they didn't even try to fix it. So I guess, I don't know, I guess they had to make money one way or another. The parish at the church closed in 2017. The historic building was built in a Romanesque revival style
Starting point is 00:01:21 and is older than the city's first subway lines. The Archdiocese of New York is finalizing the sale for $5 million, pending final approval from Manhattan Supreme Court. The city says it will extend the semi-protected bike lane along half of McGinnis Boulevard in Greenpoint, Brooklyn for the entire stretch of the busy roadway. WNYC Stephen Nesson stopped by to take the temperature on local residents. Some people in Greenpoint say the changes have been great. Seeing the bike lane is definitely dope. That's 29-year-old Kai Maloney. But longtime resident Jackie Petrush says what's not dope is how cars frequently park in the bike lane.
Starting point is 00:01:59 That's the most annoying thing because this. then you have to pull out into traffic. While many drivers say they're glad to have a safe place for cyclists, the Secretary of GNS's truck and auto repair, Bella Gelman, says the lanes took away precious parking. They were in a neighborhood. Bring back the roads. Next month, the city will start building the rest of the bike lane. We'll see partly sunny skies today.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon. Some of those may produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall. We'll see highs today in the mid-80s. mostly cloudy tonight with a chance of showers in the evening, then partly cloudy after midnight with lows in the lower 60s.
