Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Wednesday, February 14th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. As you've been hearing, Democrat Tom Swazi is going back to Congress. Swazi defeated Republican candidate Mazzie Pilipin last night's special election to replace the expelled George Santos, eroding the Republican Party's already slim majority in the chamber. Swazi says he believes people with different views can come together.

The way to make our country a better place is to try and find common ground. Pellips says the last eight weeks of intense campaigning was valuable. Each one of you looks so hard every single day in the last eight weeks. and we need a great job. We are a fighter. Yes, we lost, but it doesn't mean we're going to end here. Democrats and Republicans will battle over the congressional seat once again in November. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy says soon, large groups of people could become eligible for a clemency.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Murphy has never issued a pardon or commuted anyone's sentence, but on WNIC's Ask Governor Murphy Call-in Show last night, He said his administration plans a major clemency initiative in the next few months. The governor stopped short of saying who might be eligible, but he hinted that the list would be substantial. Broad categories of individuals who would automatically be eligible upon application for accelerated consideration. Murphy's predecessor, Chris Christie granted dozens of clemencies, including the people convicted of gun possession who had licenses from out of state, and to campaign donors convicted of arson. Romantics, beware, state officials in New York and New Jersey are warning of Valentine's Day-related scams seeking to take advantage of our hearts and wallets.
Starting point is 00:02:09 New York's Consumer Protection Division says scammers will likely try to exploit our emotions and trust to steal our personal information or money around the holidays. So it says, be careful. 33 and actually 32 now and clear, sunny and cold, upper 30s today. North wind will make you feel cold. than that down to the 20s, clear and cold tonight in mid-20s in the city, and then tomorrow we'll hit 40, but we'll feel a lot colder than that with a chance of rain and snow on Thursday night.
