Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Thursday, January 11th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Evictions are surging across New York City, and a WNMC review of city data shows the removal rate is starting to mirror pre-pandemic trends.
WNIC's David Brand reports on the findings.
City Marshals carried out roughly 12,000.
thousand evictions in 2023, according to city data. That's triple the total from the prior year when
pandemic-related tenant protections and landlord relief programs ran out. The number of evictions in
October and November actually surpassed the total from 2019, the year before the pandemic. All told,
landlords have filed more than 550,000 eviction cases over the past four years, a number roughly
equal to the combined populations of Buffalo and Jersey City.
The City Health Department is recruiting 10,000 people for a study on the long-term outcomes of New York City adults who have been infected with COVID.
It will then follow up with them over several years.
The goal is to have New York City specific data on how COVID-19 affects individuals over time.
Policymakers and others can then use the data to create more targeted support services.
The CDC says some people can experience fatigue, respiratory problems, and other symptoms from
months or even years after contracting COVID.
