Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Thursday, January 18th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
The NYPD says charges have been filed overnight against a man connected to five stabbing in Southeast Queens over the last couple weeks.
Multiple reports this morning say 27-year-old Jermaine Rieger has been charged with attempted murder and other crimes
for the string of incidents which started last Monday when a 61-year-old man was stabbed in the lower back.
Then Tuesday, a 34-year-old woman was stabbed after she got off a bus.
Police now say three people were stabbed yesterday, and the suspect it was by the same person.
None of the people stabbed has life-threatening injuries.
New York City and state officials are urging the federal government to improve conditions
at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center after a federal federal government.
federal judge refused to send a defendant there calling the facility dreadful. Judge Jesse
Furman would not send a 70-year-old defendant with health conditions there. He said there have been
near perpetual lockdowns, delays in access to medical care, and multiple suicides at the Sunset Park
jail. A federal bureau of prison spokesperson says a problem at the jail stemmed from a lack of
funding and a staffing shortage. New York City soon will recruit residents to join a study to examine
of the long-term effects of COVID. New York City Health Commissioner Oxrin Vosin said it's important
to learn more about the virus to be able to support COVID survivors over time.
16% reported that they're having long-term emotional or mental health effects. And what we need
to understand with this cohort is what is really tied to this brand-new virus that entered our
country and our world? Dr. Vosan says the city-specific
data will be shared with the public and health providers who they can better understand
how to ask questions about COVID and its possible long-term symptoms.
City health officials are looking for 10,000 participants to join this study who will then,
they will then follow over multiple years.
For a fifth morning in a row, New York City is under a Code Blue Advisory.
The City Department of Homeless Services activates these alerts when the temperature
drops below freezing, allowing local officials to relax shelter,
rules. It also opens drop-in centers to help people escape the extreme weather. The city's asking
people to call 311 if they see someone outdoors vulnerable to the cold and in need of shelter.
New Jersey has several places as well. 24 and cloudy now, mostly cloudy today. We'll hit the
freezing mark of 32. The real feel right now is 14. Snow coming tomorrow morning and it's going to
stick two to four inches. Thanks for listening. This is NYC now from WNYC. Be sure to catch us
