Welcome to NYC Now.

It's Wednesday, January 24th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Mayor Eric Adams battle with the city council over a bill.
He's vetoed, escalated into an unusual squabble at City Hall yesterday.
WNC's Elizabeth Kim was there.
In response to the mayor's latest attacks on a bill requiring NYPD officers to
report all investigative stops of civilians, the council was going to hold a press conference outside
City Hall. But the event was moved indoors at the last minute due to rain. That's when things
really got stormy. Adams' deputy chief of staff, Manashe Shapiro, entered the rotunda and demanded
reporters give up their chairs provided for the event, saying they belong to the mayor's office.
Adams later said the council hadn't requested permission to use the space, but a council
spokesperson says the mayor was trying to, quote, muzzle critics. The council is set to hold an override
vote on the mayor's veto next month. Richard Burdenick, the sheriff of Passaic County, New Jersey
shot and killed himself in a Clifton restaurant yesterday afternoon. That's according to multiple
reports. Patterson is Passaic County's largest city and county C. The city's mayor, Andre
Sayas, says he spoke with the sheriff the day before his death. Well, he was an exemplary
law enforcement leader. I mean, we were partners during the pandemic, and just recently we had
issues with flooding in Patterson, and we offered assistance any way he could as far as potential
rescue operations. Burdening had served as sheriff since 2011. He announced last week his department
would lay off more than two dozen correction officers. Days earlier, a Passaic County
correctional officer and two sergeants were arrested for allegedly violating a pre-trial to
civil rights. 20 city parks across the five boroughs will get a hundred million dollars
through the city's community parks initiative. The program directs funding to historically under-resourced
parks. 67 other locations have received funding since the CPI initiative launched in the fall of
2014. A new CUNY study found investing in parks correlates directly with improved health benefits
for anyone living near them. Hallets Point Playground in Historia will be the first.
to get community input with a meeting scheduled for this evening.
39 when clouds out there now.
Rain likely today, mainly late this afternoon,
cloudy in the high of 46,
